No Steam controller input in the Steam beta for most games

EDIT: So I tried it in Windows and it doesn't work there either I'm going to assume at this point that it's not Arch related, so any mod can feel free to delete this if they see fit (however if someone has experienced this problem before, please let me know any ideas, I've contacted Steam support in the meantime).

I'm using a steam controller with Arch Linux and the Steam beta.

The controller works for controlling the mouse in desktop, and for navigating Steam in big picture mode.

However once I launch a game, the controller is not responsive most of the time. Once the game is running, it will not respond to any input from the controller, only from the keyboard and mouse.

I tried unplugging the keyboard and mouse first, but that did not help.

In Cuphead (proton) and Limbo (native) the controller does not work, but it does work in Thumper (proton). I haven't tested any other games yet. I updated the firmware for the controller after first using it (Steam prompted me to).

I also tried opting out of the Steam beta (and restarting Steam). The controller was still not responsive in any games.

Anyone have any ideas?
