Another beyond, still working on that troublesome suspend2 update. If you've had any problems, please update to this one, and let me know how it works.
I have setup a bug tracker for beyond to make it easier to track and deal with any bugs that arise. If you have any problems, please post a bug at:
<strong><a href="http://iphitus.loudas.com/bugs">Bug Tracker - http://iphitus.loudas.com/bugs</a></strong>
Beyond now also includes a majority of gentoo's <a href="http://dev.gentoo.org/~dsd/genpatches/">genpatches</a>, which should assist with stability and keeping beyond right up to date.
<strong>Changes in beyond2.2</strong>
Updated suspend2 from 2.2.7.3 to 2.2.7.4
Updated genpatches from -4 to -5
Updated vesafb-tng
Added descriptions for some modules in series file

I just changed to kernel-beyond and followed the wiki instructions (http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Gensplash) to install gensplash. I too am finding this error message appears though as I've just changed I cannot confirm that it's just with this beyond kernel.
The error I get is:
No 8bpp silent picture specified in the theme configuration file.
My /boot/grub/menu.lst:
title Arch Linux Silent [/boot/vmlinuz26beyond]
root (hd0,0)
kernel /boot/vmlinuz26beyond root=/dev/hda1 devfs=nomount ro video=vesafb:ywrap,mtrr,1024x768-32@60 splash=silent,theme:darch console=tty1 quiet
initrd /boot/fbsplash-darch-1024x768
I generated the fbsplash-darch-1024x768 image using:
splash_geninitramfs -v -g /boot/fbsplash-theme-1024x768 -r 1024x768 theme
I also made the modification in /etc/mkinitcpio.conf as per the gensplash install scripts instructions:
# Added fbsplash as per gensplash's instructions
HOOKS="base udev autodetect ide scsi sata filesystems fbsplash"
FBTHEMES="darch"
FBRES="1024x768"
Wish I could help with this but not an area I know ANYTHING about. Any assistance would be welcomed and appreciated however.

my suspend is dead, bug up.
Not really sure if it's a problem with beyond, or just a struggle between suspend2 and my laptop. I haven't tried it in the past.
Offline
suspend2's dead here too; suspending freezed at "atomic copy" stage. I fired it off in text mode, and I saw that there's a kernel panic, but I didn't record what in particular the problem was (I'll make a note next time I have a chance).
Edit: Added the bug to flyspray.

How can you have genpatches 5 when 4 is the latest?
Edit: Maybe you mean Gentoo-Sources-r5?

Does the kernel26beyond package must depend on BOTH mkinitcpio AND mkinitramfs?
I already use mkinitcpio only, don't want to install mkinitramfs when I don't need it.
Offline
kernel26beyond will migrate to mkinitcpio only in the near future, but at the moment it required mkinitramfs as well, to accommodate all users. You have two choices:
- decide not to worry about having mkinitramfs on your system for a short while.
- install kernel26beyond with the -d switch to avoid the dependency check.

I've been using a workaround for a while now, try this:
pkgname=mkinitdummy
pkgver=10
pkgrel=1
pkgdesc="mkinitrd/mkinitramfs dummy"
depends=('coreutils')
conflicts=('mkinitrd' 'mkinitramfs')
provides=('mkinitrd' 'mkinitramfs')
build() {
cd $startdir/pkg/
mkdir sbin
ln -s /bin/true sbin/mkinitrd
ln -s /bin/true sbin/mkinitramfs
}

if you were on the gentoo-kernel mailing list, you would have seen that genpatches5 was announced about a week ago:
[gentoo-kernel] [ANNOUNCE] genpatches-2.6.17-5 release
and its tagged in the CVS: http://sources.gentoo.org/viewcvs.py/li … /2.6.17-5/
seems the site just isnt updated.
Haha, that reminds me to check my email, thanks. Wow, so dsd is no longer maintainer?

Not only is beyond3 out, but beyond 3 is, well, how should I put it.....?
Suspend2-o-rama!! Hibernate City!! Everything you expect from the Tux-in-an-Ice-Cube team!!
.... plus, of course, all the other meaty goodness that beyond brings us.
Thanks for all the hard work, iph, sorry, beyond* - it's been worth the wait.
*It's going to take a while to get used to that.

Not sure that is a permenant name change...

This has been posted about - you need mkinitcpio from testing

I guess the problem is here. Unfortunelly, the bootloader examples are very old, from before even intird was implemented in Arch if I remember well. You should just keep the initrd line as it was before, in this case
initrd /boot/kernel26beyond.img
I'll modify the gensplash wiki to include this and mkinitcpio changes, hope dibble doesn't get mad.

I will if you don't go back and add in at least one example that does not use mkinitcpio! You can still do it the old way with a simple initramfs created by gensplashutils! The wiki was entirely correct as it was...this is just extra information that should have been added, not replace the previous stuff.
Offline
Sure it was right, but as initramfs will be soon deprecated as posted here, i think it is better to update all wikis to reflect that and keeping old stuff there may be confusing. I mean a wiki should be as clear as possible and not contemplate every single posibility you have to do something.
Of course, as this page is your responsibility, i may revert changes if you want me to. Maybe i should ask first, sorry.

I did not realize that the bootloader section had been added specifically for kernel26beyond - therefore you did the right thing to update it to mkinitcpio. I guess my linked examples still hold examples for non-beyond users but that could be better explained.

yay, i have suspend!!
Now, i just gotta figure out some shell scripting to get around this uber weird wifi card
Before suspend:
grab essid and key
After suspend:
bring interface down
set essid and key off
scan for networks
grab a network off the prefence list, and connect as usual.
It's so weird that i have to set the essid and key off before conencting again...
Offline
That's been dealt with in mkinitcpio 0.4.4, which is now in [current].

Thanks for the help MartinZ.
Whatever the problem was (I'd say me stuffing something up anyway), I did an another Arch system this week and had no issues getting pretty screens going and all that so yeah - beyond is good - love the beyond.
