Xiaomi Notebook Pro 15" : bumblebee doesn't work

Hello Archers,


I am posting here because I need some help with my laptop installed with Archlinux and Bumblebee. I did my installation in 2018/01, everything worked it was so nice, including Optimus technology with Bumblebee.
Since the installation, I didn't used Bumblebee until today. But Bumblebee doesn't work, hey.

I read on the net, a lot of people have problems with Bumblebee and new laptops recently. I tried many things, but I can't solve this problem by myself.

My problem is, bbswitch seems to work, according to dmesg output, but after nvidia module is loaded during the boot and so bumblebee can't work. I can't block the loading of nvidia, I tried different kernel options and to blacklist nvidia module, doesn't work.

Well, the presence of IPMI is strange, do you use the IPMI modules? Maybe that force the load of nvidia module.
Can you please add the full dmesg output?

In fact I will be honest, I don't know what are the IPMI modules. I tried to unload them because I would to unload the nvidia module but it didn't work.

Edit : the full dmesg output, I already checked and I didn't see something weird except errors caused by my touchpad (sorry for my english, I am not a native speaker).

I also checked, my nvidia gpu is ON so after the boot and without tried to use Bumblebee, it can be explain by the loading of the nvidia module and it could explain why my Bumblebee setup doesn't work I guess ?

The IPMI is like a tool who can "monitor" the host OS.
In the dmesg I see that IPMI indeed start the nvidia module, that's strange but try to force the blacklist the IPMI modules in /etc/modprobe.d with:

install ipmi_si /bin/false
install ipmi_devintf /bin/false
install ipmi_msghandler /bin/false

Restart and see if bumblebee work.

I didn't understand how to use your command lines, so I tried basically to blacklist the ipmi modules :

cat /etc/modprobe.d/ipmi.conf
blacklist ipmi_si
blacklist ipmi_devintf
blacklist ipmi_msghandler

But it didn't work :

Maybe the way I blacklisted the ipmi modules ? I will check if I can blacklist them with kernel options.

My BIOS is really poor, I don't have any option related to that.

Do you think a BIOS update may help ? I saw new versions for my BIOS exist.

Maybe, but i recommend to check the bios changelog if there is any before of the bios update. At last resource I will recommend to compile the kernel without IPMI if you have enough time.

Ok I upgraded my BIOS; nothing changed.

I saw upgrade for nvidia and bbswitch in the repositories, I will upgrade them and test.

I will check how to recompile my kernel without ipmi. Thanks for your help !

Ok then I compiled the kernel, and I have a kernel panic during the boot, very early (around 0,5 seconds).

I don't know if it's due to the deletion of IPMI modules or if I missed something during the compilation or after the installation of the kernel.


Edit : I tried with stock kernel and without the kernel option "pci_aspm=force", ipmi and nvidia modules arn't loaded, but I can"t use my Bumblebee setup ;

Exactly same model, use i3wm and a nvidia-xrun like script to toggle nvidia. May be you can try other methods and application.
