This has only started in the past week, and I have no idea why. When a new window is created or opened, any open windows hide. I can still switch to the hidden windows as normal, but it's very disconcerting.
A couple of examples. In Blender, open user preferences and the main Blender UI disappears. Close the preferences and it re-opens. In Gimp, open a dialog window, and the main UI disappears, and comes back when the dialog is closed.
And it's not restricted to same applications windows. If I have FF open, and then open a terminal, FF disappears.
I don't recall changing anything, and have no idea what would this or even where to look.
XFCE4, LXDM, compton as the compositor. Nothing changed in any, but they seem to be the obvious suspects.
Any ideas? Maybe I accidentally hit a KB shortcut, but no idea which.

First of, get the compositor out of the equation, but this is most likely an issue w/ xfwm4, try to replace it w/ openbox. If that's not causing this weird behavior, move away the xfwm4 config.
If xfwm4 behaves afterwards, have a close look at that config. If not, this is probably a bug in xfwm4 and it probably started with an update?

OK, Good catch. It seems to be compton, though I don't recall an update recently. Nope, on checking there hasn't been an update:
cat /var/log/pacman.log | grep compton
[2013-05-21 18:47] [PACMAN] Running 'pacman -U compton-git-2013.05.16.g1b34dc3-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz'
[2013-05-21 18:47] [PACMAN] installed compton-git (2013.05.16.g1b34dc3-1)
[2013-06-08 12:58] [PACMAN] Running 'pacman -R compton-git'
[2013-06-08 12:58] [PACMAN] removed compton-git (2013.05.16.g1b34dc3-1)
Guess I could use xfce's own compositor, though there was a reason I dumped it (just can't remember what)
EDIT: That log is weird. The last entry should at least be "installed"?

Don't cat | grep, just grep.
pacman -Qs compton
pacman -Qi compton-git
Also those entries are *really* old, what about the stock compton version, https://www.archlinux.org/packages/comm … 4/compton/
Is this a visual thing then or are the windows really unmapped? (ie. if you click their supposed location and then enter some text or so and ultimately kill compton, did the input make it into the window?

Just tried it, and the same issue.
I remembered my problem with xfce'2 own compositor, which was a blank screen on boot. After switching to a different tty and back again the system is fine.
Solution is at https://devtalk.nvidia.com/default/topi … -390-25-/1. Can't believe that this is still a live bug. I'll soldier on with the WM compositor for now, and see if any other issues emerge. Thank you for your help.
