After a system upgrade a few days ago (13/09 I think), fonts in firefox, thunderbird and other gtk applications (but not QT apps) are aliased, barely readable.
See here : https://screenshots.firefox.com/SryUv8F … hlinux.org
How can I investigate the problem ? Where should I start ?

I suggest to check the uploaded picture in another device - there seems nothing wrong in that screenshot.

Was fontconfig upgraded? Check in /var/log/pacman.log
Do you have:
# ls -l /etc/fonts/conf.d/70-no-bitmaps.conf
... /etc/fonts/conf.d/70-no-bitmaps.conf -> ../conf.avail/70-no-bitmaps.conf

@seth indeed the image is perfectly normal on another machine. That's a start !

apparently the problem was coming from my screen. Marked as solved.

Explain what the solution was, it will help others.
Those fonts look blurry/smudged, compared to mine.

@brebs I'm not sure I understand it myself.
In my first post I said I saw an aliasing problem only in GTK, but I was mistaken (also visible in QT). Then I realized maybe the problem was everywhere and not just the fonts - just easier to spot on small sharp details. And indeed it was, for I could see it in the screenshot I showed you.
So I started messing up with my screen's weird menus no one really understands, and BAM! The artefact stopped instantly! I'm still unsure if I changed anything. It just "fell in place", for a lack of a better term. Sorry, this is really not helpful but I can't say much more ...

I assume it was confusion over the screen resolution, with scaling of the pixels taking place.
