GTK 3.24 breaks icon theme

I was pretty pleased when GTK 3.22 was announced as a stable final release, because every time they update it, something breaks. sure enough, after the update to 3.24, my icon theme (ACYLS) stopped working and just displayed grey icons instead of the colours I'd specified. A downgrade to GTK 3.22 fixed the issue, but does anyone know what might be causing the issue? I'd prefer to upgrade and fix the issue rather than sit on a workaround for ages.

I appreciate that it might be a problem with the icon theme, but I can't think why it would suddenly not work. The Adwaita theme works (of course it does), but it's ugly as sin.

I assume the icon theme (which seems to privide a very specific fature?) needs fixing.
The "stable final" was thrown out of the window, https://blog.gtk.org/2018/06/23/a-gtk-3-update/ - gtk 3.24 wouldn't exist otherwise.

Just as an update to this I can confirm that a different icon theme (DarK) works fine. I would try and fix the original theme if I had any idea what had changed to break it, but ho hum. I've never been able to find any information on themeing gtk 3 which wasn't utterly impenetrable. So I guess it's not really "solved", but it's worked around.
