Is underclocking a monitor refresh rate from 60hz to 50hz dangerous?

On gaming sites, often you can read of people talking about "overclocking" monitors; which translates in pushing it to display images at higher refresh rates than advertised.

Yesterday i was trying to play an heavy 3D game, and the fps sometimes dropped under 60 (the native refresh rate), causing stuttering.
Next, i've used gtf and xrandr to add new modes to the display server.
To my surprise, i've been able to push my monitor down to 50hz (did not tried to go firther), with no apparent downsides.
The game is now smooth without any stuttering; plus i can watch PAL movies and play PAL emulators (AMIGA!) without stuttering.
Now i plan to edit the EDID to add the new modes to it.

...but before that, i'm concerned. Could that pratice somehow damage the monitor? Is it dangerous?

Thanks!

You probably swallowed a placebo.
However it should not cause damage to your monitor.
But, YMMV and I am not liable for possible damage.
