I am unable to hear the audio in any flash animations/videos. How do I enable the sound in flashplugin?

As far as I know, that's due to the fact that many (if not most) websites use a newer version of Flash while we (meaning linux users) have an older version. I cannot hear audio either.

Orrrr it's because the flash plugin uses OSS.
run `aoss firefox` and be happy.

I see. So does that mean that we just have to sit and wait, or is there some sort of patch or upgrade we can install?

When I ran aoss firefox I still had that problem.

Sites that require Flash 8.x+ won't work... we have to wait for the Linux version of it (someday next spring, Adobe says).

Try closing all other apps before opening firefox. The flash plugin writes to /dev/dsp directly so it will not work if anything else at all has played sound since firefox was open (unless your soundcard supports hardware mixing).

OSS does still work or at least the alsa backwards compatibility layer that emulates the old interfaces, right? did i miss anything?
for newer versions of flash (like version 9) simply install firefox in wine and let it install the plugin. that usually works great!
I recognize that while theory and practice are, in theory, the same, they are, in practice, different. -Mark Mitchell

It works now that I installed alsa-oss and restarted the computer to free up and sound usage. Thanks for the help.
