[SOLVED] Encrypted root SSD remounted readonly and system freezes

I bought a used HP 350 G1 laptop with a brand new Samsung SSD 860 EVO 250GB harddisk. I installed Archlinux with Lightdm and Plasma as follows:

root@archiso ~ # parted -l
Model: ATA Samsung SSD 860 (scsi)
Disk /dev/sda: 250GB
Sector size (logical/physical): 512B/512B
Partition Table: gpt
Disk Flags:

Number Start End Size File system Name Flags
 1      17.4kB  1066kB  1049kB                     bios_grub
 2      1066kB  2149MB  2147MB  ext3         boot
 3      2149MB  250GB   248GB                root

I encrypted sda3 for the root patition.

/etc/default/grub:

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="root=/dev/mapper/cryptroot cryptdevice=/dev/disk/by-uuid/3c692597-df0e-4edb-a05f-3f177ca29ed8:cryptroot"

/etc/lstab:

# /dev/mapper/cryptroot
UUID=c55af03b-e511-42ef-9ab5-37fa97377924       /               ext4            rw,noatime,discard      0 1
# /dev/sda2
UUID=33eb89ae-c88f-4566-a507-8e900af86c23       /boot           ext3            rw,noatime      0 2

My problem:
The system (Plasma with Palemoon, Firefox, Krusader, CUPS, tmux, fish) works blazing fast and perfectly but after about one hour or several hours the system freezes and either
1 writes some errors onto the console about the disk being remounted read-only hence unable to write logfiles, or
2 dies completely, or
3 does not spit out any messages but simply refuses to even execute an ls command (it says input-output error), the mouse still moves in Plasma, but I' unable to start any programs and already running programs crash on interaction.

I check the CPU temperature regularly during the whole time, it does not increase.

I ran

badblocks /dev/sda1
badblocks /dev/sda2
badblocks /dev/sda3
smartctl -t short /dev/sda

all returned no errors.

Now I'm out of ideas. When I bought the laptop there was a working Windows 10 installed on it, but I didn't run it for more than two minutes before wiping it so I don't know if the problem occured with windows as well. The seller said (of course) that the laptop worked perfectly. There is no warranty.
Please, if anyone can come up with ideas how to proceed with this, speak up.

UPDATE:
I forgot to mention that the system freezes only when booted from the harddrive, when I boot from the pendrive used to install archlinux it just works perfectly. That is why I suspected a hard disk failure.

Re: [SOLVED] Encrypted root SSD remounted readonly and system freezes

Try a long smartctl test. It sounds a lot like hard drive failures I've had in the past. Run a RAM check too.

And I also forgot to mention, that right now I'm running the long test big_smile

Re: [SOLVED] Encrypted root SSD remounted readonly and system freezes

The symptoms you mentioned are exactly as in my case with external USB with bad cable. My solution was to buy new disk.

The reason behind io errors is follows. After cable disconnects, so does sdx device with devmapper link. This makes not cached in memory binaries unavailable.

Should I set it to max_performance?

So maybe simply shaking the laptop should cause the crash?

Yes I would add a udev rule setting it to max_performance on boot and see if it has any effect.

OK thanks, so I did. Now let's see it on the long run...

Re: [SOLVED] Encrypted root SSD remounted readonly and system freezes

@loqs
Thank you, this seems to have solved the issue. The laptop is running continuously since yesterday without crash.
I'll mark this thread as solved, and we'll start using the system full time now.
