I recently had troubles with certain djvu files

This only happens with zathura (e.g. djview is fine) and only recently (although I don't have a precise timeline).
Is there any adjustable feature one can teak, or is it a bug?

Are all the pages of the file the same size? I sometimes have this issue even with pdfs when the pages are different sizes. Typically the first page is a cover sheet, and is much larger than the remaining pages. The first page renders nicely, but the rest render similar to your picture.
What I've done in this case is use pdftk (or similar tool) to remove the offending pages. If necessary, I then resize those pages and then put everything back together.

It seems to me they are the same size, and indeed it happens also with pdf files.
