i already searched the forums but didn't find a solution for this:
in konqueror and licq etc i can't get german characters like ö ä ü.
this is in my rc.conf:
LOCALE="en_EN.utf8"
KEYMAP="de-latin1"
and this in my locale.gen
en_US.UTF-8 UTF-8
en_US ISO-8859-1
i want to have an "english environment" but beeing able to draw these characters at the same time!
any ideas?

The rc.conf stuff is for the console. For X, you'll need to change the keyboard layout in xorg.conf. Setting :
Option "XkbLayout" "de"
in the keyboard section will do it (unless "de" is not the correct option).

it was already there...
[edit]
i installed the german package for kde kde-i18n-de with no success!

I too have same kind of problem with finnish "ö ä å" with konqueror and opera.
I have kde-i18n-fi installed and Option "XkbLayout" "fi" but still
In gnome all works fine..

Perhaps you should generate the de-locales (even if you use only en_EN.utf8)

actually these characters do appear if i create a new file on my linux partition but no on my mounted vfat drive and in licq.
adding de_DE.utf8 to my locales doesn't change that.

Hello,
I got the same problem since .. well since I installed Arch a couple of weeks ago. Odd.. could be broken.
Offline
actually i fixed it by changing the mount options for my harddisk and changing the language settings in licq

What did you change on your mount options? I am loading ext3 disks.. can I set the encoding to use there at all? And why would I want this when there is UTF8?

I had the same problem, but then I rerun locale-gen and the problem was fixed...
