pdf print and display sizes: this is weird and annoying

I generated a file using pdflatex - a4 page with a text width of 17cm.

Then I viewed it with kpdf (my DisplaySize is about correct): width 15.0cm

Then I printed it from kpdf: width 16.0cm

Then I viewed it with kghostview: width 16.7cm (acceptable I suppose)

Then I printed it with kghostview: width 17.0cm

gv was the same as kghostview.

Then I viewed it with xpdf: width 14.5cm

Then I printed it with xpdf: width 16.0cm

Then I printed it with lpr: width 16.0cm

Then I viewed it with evince: width 14.5cm (wouldn't print)

Then I resorted to the monster (acroread): width 16.8cm

Then I printed it with acroread: width 17cm

All the viewing applications were set to 100%.

Can anyone tell me what's going on here? This is a real pain! (ok I can live with the various display sizes, that's just odd, but the printing should really be right (consistent), shouldn't it?
