[solved] Graphical desktop grinds to a halt after a few hours.

Hi,

Ever since updating my system last week, I've been experiencing an issue where by the time I come home from work X11 has locked up, and I'm unable to log back in. I can either reboot or kill Xorg in a separate tty and then re-startx to get back in for a few more hours. Last night I happened to catch this happening, and saw the mouse lag, stutter, and then the system became unresponsive (though audio continued to play unaffected).

Attached is the output of dmesg. It's incomplete and absolutely packed with audit message spam. I haven't experienced that previously.

dmesg: https://0bin.net/paste/WFOzpjpNHLprfQH4 … Q0AVl5hbZz

What is the output of `hostnamectl`? Have you run hardware checks (mem and smartctl)?

And check your process list (top) - the stuttering mouse suggests that something loads the CPU, in doubt the kswapd for thrashing (ie. OOM)

[berocs@bns-anarch ~]$ hostnamectl
   Static hostname: bns-anarch
         Icon name: computer-desktop
           Chassis: desktop
        Machine ID: b0e52c5d0bce4476b58b7ac0a39d6b00
           Boot ID: 2a60f537581349d391be77be7e96764c
  Operating System: Arch Linux
            Kernel: Linux 4.18.12-arch1-1-ARCH
      Architecture: x86-64

I ran smart short and long tests on the root and home ssd's, both completed without error. I don't know how to print just the test results, but here's the summary output.

[berocs@bns-anarch ~]$ sudo smartctl -H /dev/sdd
smartctl 6.6 2017-11-05 r4594 [x86_64-linux-4.18.12-arch1-1-ARCH] (local build)

[berocs@bns-anarch ~]$ sudo smartctl -H /dev/sde

I'm going to run a round of memtest, but wanted to post this information first.

Today I left the system running with a blank desktop; no applications open. It was frozen when I got back, and I checked top in another tty to find `/usr/lib/Xorg` reading between 40 to 100% CPU.

Re: [solved] Graphical desktop grinds to a halt after a few hours.

Since the server (unless running into a live lock) responds to requests, there's most likely been a second process w/ high load, banging the server.
Also: xorg log, please.

Re: [solved] Graphical desktop grinds to a halt after a few hours.

Trying with a "blank desktop" was a good idea - but can you elaborate on exactly what this means.  Do you use a DM/DE?  If so, can you try with xinit and a simple WM (twm could suffice) or even no WM, and just a xterm.  This may narrow down whether this may be due to a problematic component of your current WM/DE.

Re: [solved] Graphical desktop grinds to a halt after a few hours.

Right, sorry, that's basic information I should have included to begin with.

On this machine I'm using i3-wm with largely default configuration (i3status, dmenu). I don't use a DE or login screen, the system just boots to a tty login prompt and then I manually run `startx`.

When I set it up to run "blank" I closed chromium, which was open, and left a terminator window open, nothing else, and then locked the desktop with xscreensaver.

I should also include that I've tried booting on linux and linux-lts, the freeze happens on both.

I'll try xinit after letting memtest complete. Thanks!

xscreensaver is anything but a "blank desktop" - several of the "hacks" (fancy shows) can easily knock out your CPU on the hack and Xorg process…

It was xscreensaver. I was using an AUR package that was out of date. Updated it to latest and the system seems to be working reliably again.

Thank you all for the troubleshooting help!
