No image / distorted image after system update / fresh install
Hello.
I have a laptop with a Nvidia 9300M GS [NV98 (G98)] which I think is the cause of this problem.
I was using the proprietary driver when X was updated to 1.20 and the 390xx got incompatible. I decided to downgrade X temporarily. Some time passed and nvidia 390xx got support to X 1.20.
I'm trying to avoid proprietary for the sake of testing nouveau. Every time I update this laptop I spend a lot of time troubleshooting nvidia-related things. I want to try nouveau but I can't get it working. I use this for web browsing or equivalente, so the performance is not a problem.
The problem/behavior:
- after system update, using the proprietary driver I got black screen after starting X
- after system update, using nouveau I got distorted image right in tty
- after a fresh install, same with nouveau (I did not try nvidia)
- any recent installation media gets me black screen too; 2017.03.01 works ok,
I followed the wiki for system installation and nouveau installation. I have no idea how to get any related feedback from the system (logs) because I can't have online access to it (I can get the hdd out of the laptop and chroot to it, though).

I can see while I'm writing (is to not frozen) but I can't startx nor read anything.
The laptop is a clevo M760 and its native LCD resolution is 1680x1050.
Any ideas how to get more info / debug / logs?

You can chroot in and paste your logs.

Boot "nomodeset" for some readable access (console only, Xorg depends on modesetting)
Afaiu the nvidia blob works "best" and your "only" problem is X11?
