HP mt40 freezing after resume from sleep

I'm lost, I've spent two days trying to resolve this issue with absolutely no luck. I tried all the solutions provided on the forums to no avail.

Specifically my problem is the laptop will freeze ALWAYS after suspend. Sometimes immediately and sometimes it take a minute, But it will ALWAYS freeze. no mouse movement no key movement. no key combo to reboot. nothing works till I do a cold reboot, holding power key down for a few seconds.

If it doesn't freeze right up, starting X and opening chromium will always cause it to freeze. If I do not suspend then the laptop runs like a top and I have no issues.

I'm not sure what to do? Any tips hints or pointers are welcomed.
I even tried switching out my ram, to rule out a possible hardware issue. Unless the port on the MB is bad. it doesn't appear to be hardware related to RAM
I've tried setting cstate and pstate as suggested in one thread to no avail
I've tried using modesetting in xorg trying to rule out the xf86-video-intel driver issue.
I even tried replacing the broadcom network card with a more reliable realtek card. Nothing

Hoping someone here can give me a clue. Journalctl -b-1 just ends with a suspend message. I don't see anything useful, but I posted it below along with the lspci -vnn output so you can see what I am working with.

EDIT:The one thing that always appears on the screen after a resume is a TPM error. Although I did try to rmmod tpm and suspend with no luck either. Unless I need to boot with TPM blacklisted, which I did not try.

$ lspci -vnn

Re: HP mt40 freezing after resume from sleep

For what it is worth the bug described here sounds exactly like my problem. There is no subsequent call to synchronize the files.
Yet, as I understand it, the linux kernel in core is already patched. I've also tried lts and i can't recall it fixing the issue.
the only left that I can think of is install arch on a plain jane sata drive using legacy bios and see what comes of it... not really what I wanted to do

https://lkml.org/lkml/2018/9/3/67

This is a real bummer, finally found a laptop I can use linux on after a few years and this seems to be a deal breaker

Re: HP mt40 freezing after resume from sleep

ok, now to some good news. I did manage to find a kernel that didn't freeze using some ubuntu releases. Using 14.04.5

kernel

ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ uname -r
4.4.0-31-generic

now what I am wondering is if I can build that version using arch without much trouble? Obviously git bisect is the way to go here.
If anyone knows how far I can go back and compile without issues that would be appreciated. one way or another I'd like to get to the bottom of this and report a proper bug. As this is a regression, it should be straight forward... famous last words
