[SOLVED] Pavucontrol shows sound output but no audio can be listened

[SOLVED]
I was using 4.14.74-1-lts. (For some reason Arch started to use the LTS version). After changing it to 4.18.16-arch1-1-ARCH the sound just got working again smile

******

Hi! First of all, sorry for the bad english, not my first language.

I'm having some problem with my alsa/pulseaudio setup. Pavucontrol shows the audio bouncing when some software that outputs audio is being executed, but no sound at all in headphones or speakers are being executed.

I have a dualboot setup for gaming and the other OS runs audio just fine, so it's not a hardware issue at all.

I kind give up on trying to find a solution to my problem and finally came here to ask for help.

I have alsa-utils, alsa-plugins, pulseaudio, pulseaudio-alsa and pavucontrol installed

Here are some outputs:

1. It's important to notice that I have a dedicated graphics card and use the nouveau approach in order to use the HDMI output on my notebook.

$ systemctl --user status pulseaudio

???

This isn't right. This isn't even wrong.

Re: [SOLVED] Pavucontrol shows sound output but no audio can be listened

Few things to try, maybe some interaction issues with auto-mute mode and your card/the driver, check if

amixer -c0 set 'Auto-Mute Mode',0 'Disabled'
amixer -c0 set 'Speaker',0 100%,100% on

helps. Also, though 10 might also be a natural sink number from attempting to plug and unplug the headphones, maybe your detected port mustn't change. To check that comment the line

load-module module-switch-on-port-available

in your /etc/pulse/default.pa and restart pulse with

systemctl --user restart pulseaudio

If neither of these helped, and since you mention the OtherOS  have you ensured that Fast Boot on that side is disabled? That can have weird effects on audio register state if that isn't disabled properly. It might be fixable with

alsactl init

or by properly power cycling the system (cut the power completely, unplug the cord/remove the battery on a laptop and wait a few secs)

If even that didn't work post

sudo fuser -v /dev/snd/*
pacmd list-sinks
amixer -c0

again.

@Judd the amixer output is a much more usable representation of everything alsamixer would show, so in that regard we have everything we need.

FWIW that authcookie message is weird, what's the output of

stat /home/alcom0rz/.config/pulse/

Re: [SOLVED] Pavucontrol shows sound output but no audio can be listened

Let's go by parts:

A.
I've commented the described line in /etc/pulse/default.p but when I restarted pulseaudio it just stuck. So I CTRL+C the command and tried to start pulseaudio, same thing. Stucked. CTRL+C and restarted the notebook.

B.
Disabled fastboot on BIOS and in the other OS configuration. Shutdown, did what you said about the battery also. Turned on and rebooted twice just to be sure. Still no sound.

alsactl init

Re: [SOLVED] Pavucontrol shows sound output but no audio can be listened

I believe I must mention the following, during the executing of the command

$ alsactl init

The output begins with

alsactl: sysfs_init:48: sysfs path '/sys' is invalid

Maybe this is a clue?

My alsactl init:

Re: [SOLVED] Pavucontrol shows sound output but no audio can be listened

Hummmmmmm.... I read something about executing

sudo /usr/sbin/alsactl restore
sudo /usr/sbin/alsactl store

But, after executing

sudo /usr/sbin/alsactl restore

I receive the following output:

/usr/sbin/alsactl: sysfs_init:48: sysfs path '/sys' is invalid

Found hardware: "HDA-Intel" "Realtek ALC1220" "HDA:10ec1220,15589501,00100003 HDA:8086280b,80860101,00100000" "0x1558" "0x9501"
Hardware is initialized using a generic method

After executing

sudo /usr/sbin/alsactl store

I have no output, and by executing again:

sudo /usr/sbin/alsactl restore

It doesn't show the error anymore. Even so, the sound still doesn't work, even after rebooting.

Re: [SOLVED] Pavucontrol shows sound output but no audio can be listened

The error on alsactl is normal, and shouldn't really matter much. If that doesn't fix it you might want to see what's up with your jacks and maybe see if you can retask them correctly using hdajackretask from the alsa-tools package. Sometimes the jacks are logically wired weirdly and retasking them with hdajackretask can help.

FWIW afaik that's a relatively newer codec, you are not using the LTS kernel are you?

Re: [SOLVED] Pavucontrol shows sound output but no audio can be listened

Hi @V1del, thanks for your response. So... I've already installed Arch before in the same computer. Even with dualboot, never had this problem before. So I would not vote for hdajackretask as a solution since I've never needed.

Regarding the kernel, I keep my system upgraded, currently on 4.14.74-1-lts

Re: [SOLVED] Pavucontrol shows sound output but no audio can be listened

Well that's not that big of a difference that I'd expect this particular quirk to be fixed within that version range. Try the non-LTS kernel.

Re: [SOLVED] Pavucontrol shows sound output but no audio can be listened

Thanks V1del! That was the problem. Can't understand why, but after changing it to 4.18.16-arch1-1-ARCH now it just works.

Thanks again!

Re: [SOLVED] Pavucontrol shows sound output but no audio can be listened

From a hardware support standpoint the LTS kernel is a year old at this point. Any bigger change that would improve hardware support but has a bigger chance of regression would be quite unlikely to be backported to 4.14. So chances are that proper jack/codec support only landed in later kernels.
