Hi,
while trying to replace my display manager I found out I am not able to login into tty as $user anymore. I know it formerly worked but it is quite some time I used it.
I have trouble finding the right place to look for errors, as there is no real error but just the last login message and a blinking prompt.
Here is the journal:
Okt 25 19:53:21 $HOSTNAME systemd[1]: Started Getty on tty3.

Okt 25 19:53:27 $HOSTNAME systemd[1]: Started Session 4 of user $USER.
Okt 25 19:53:27 $HOSTNAME login[4263]: LOGIN ON tty3 BY $USER
dmesg contains also only the audit messages.
I cannot see anything unusual in .bashrc. Where should I look further?
Thank you for your help.

The hang is after you have entered the username and password for a none root user? If you try root instead?
Offline
Yes, sorry.
root works fine.
After I enter user and pw, I receive the message
Last Login: Thu Oct 25 19:32:13 on tty3
or something similar depending on the time I tried last.

If you login as root and create a new none root user. Can the newly created user login successfully?
Offline
Yes. A newly created user can login without problem.

If the user can login via the display manager then it would appear to be an issue with a . config file sourced on shell login.
Offline
Yes a new user can login via display manager too.
I agree it has to be something in one of the . config files.
Which ones are sourced for shell login? Can I list them?
Thank you for your help so far.

Depends on the shell for bash see Bash#Configuration_files.

Yes thank you loqs for walking me through it.
There was a line break in .bashrc in an echo cmd that broke things. Checking line by line I found it.
Works now.
