Preventing processes from freezing the system

Hi all,

I sometimes experience the situation where my system freezes because of a process, like today where I had many tabs open in my browser (Waterfox) and I tried to reload them.

What I usually do in such situations is try to kill the responsible process, but this doesn't always work and I have to reboot my system instead, which isn't the best option.

So, I was wondering if there is something I can do, to prevent this kind of situations or even better if Linux itself has a mechanism for dealing with them.
