Re: The Official Hello Everyone Thread

Hi all! Love the forum and seems quite active. Recently had a play around with Fedora on my main home PC and was fun. So decided to try get it working on my MBP 14,3 and couldn't so have decided to try get arch linux working instead since I understand it is a bit more customisable and even if I wanted to get fedora working I could maybe apply some of the steps to other distros. Hopefully a success story this weekend smile

Re: The Official Hello Everyone Thread

Hello there..

My third year of linux right now.
The culture at my sort of forced me to use Ubuntu for about a year, when I learned there was more to linux than just Ubuntu. Later, I ditched Ubuntu for Fedora with one of the reasons being that I preferred blue to purple. I was looking for a perfect distribution in the internet when I found out about Manjaro. Really sweet rolling releases, multiple desktop support ( I was bored of GNOME ) and definitely much more customization ( you could sift through kernel versions for example ).

While using Manjaro, I kept practicing how to install Arch linux ( if you know how confusing that can be ). The reason I didn't jump into Arch was that I feared I would be missing the right packages at the wrong time ( during deadlines, for example ).

As of now, I've got the latest Arch with deepin desktop on it. Let's see how far it'll go..

Re: The Official Hello Everyone Thread

Hi, everyone:

I've been using Linux for years, and played with Fedora and use Ubuntu extensively on certain boxes because it's easy to use and has about everything I need.  However, I need to build a low powered box that's lean and mean, runs 24x7, and can be upgraded "on the fly" without having to go through point upgrades to keep up with security patches.

So, I popped an Arch CD into the box and discovered I know next to NOTHING about Linux!  (Distrowatch and other sources warned me, but really? I don't even get netstat without installing the network tools?)

I admit I was lured by my LinHES MythTV box, and I was impressed by the rolling upgrades.  Pure Arch, of course is a different story!

Well, one thing for sure, it won't have any bloat unless I put it there!

I'm sure I'll be reading this forum a lot, and hopefully not posting a lot of dumb questions that may have been answered here.

I've been running Linux for years.  But yes, I'm a newbie!

Re: The Official Hello Everyone Thread

Hi.

I'm not exactly new to Arch because I used Antergos for almost 2 years.  However, when my laptop DC port broke I decided I wanted to wipe my hard drive and start fresh with proper Arch.  I don't use it on the daily because I mostly play games, so I'm on my desktop with Windows, but hopefully one day I'll get off Windows forever.

For applications there is almost always an adequate Linux replacement you can use.  For games make sure to check out Lutris to run non-Steam games and the new Steam Play for running Steam games.  Between those two your gaming on Linux has a whole lot of coverage.  This is all recent too and works awesome and we can imagine it will only get better.

Re: The Official Hello Everyone Thread

Hello all!

I've been using Arch since 2014, though that was my first GNU/Linux distro and I only really use this in a personal computing capacity so I still v.much consider myself newbie around most things GNU/Linux, though I'm comfortable enough using Arch on all my devices now (everything except my mobile phone...). I use I3WM and Zsh, on a continual learning process trying to achieve as much from the command line as possible. Absolutely love Arch, incl. the community and the documentation on the wiki. Clean, elegant, minimalist, perfect.

Hi from London.

Re: The Official Hello Everyone Thread

Hello from Orlando everyone! After failing miserably the first time I tried to install Arch, I finally got it working on my main desktop dual booting windows. I settled on dwm as my main window manager and I'm absolutely loving it!

You'll probably see a lot of me around here smile

Re: The Official Hello Everyone Thread

Hi everybody.

I've been using different linux distros for the last year, but I finally made the step to invest some time in learning how to install Arch... and I wish I had done that sooner!
I have tested Manjaro, which was not a good experience because my system broke within the first two hours of installing it both of the times I done it. Then I went to Antergos, which was stable and pleasant but I wanted the real deal, so I gave Arch a try and here I am. The moment I installed everything including a DE was so satisfying, and I learned quite a few things on the way, so it's perfect. I can say that I FINALLY away from the old Ubuntu days.
