Poor Bang Olufsen sound quality - Hp Envy 13 ad106nf

Hi,

I have just completed a fresh Arch +gnome3  install on my Hp Envy 13, model ad106nf
Here are its detailed specs
https://support.hp.com/hr-en/document/c05888558

So far, everything seems to be working great, in particular the power consumption seems on par or even more efficient than on Windows 10.

However, the audio output quality isn't satisfying: Bang & Olufsen speaker doesn't play bass but high-pitched sounds.
I've been reading quite similar issues on other linux forums :
https://www.linux.org/threads/issue-wit … kers.4589/
Also I've been attempting to fix the issue with Ubuntu's documentation (in French):
https://doc.ubuntu-fr.org/b_and_o_play

However, I could not find a straight-forward and efficient solution to fix my problem.
Did someone succeed in fixing this very issue?

Thanks a lot !

Post the changes of files you've attempted so far, as well as

amixer -c$cardindex from aplay -l
#If using pulse
pulseaudio --dump-conf
pacmd list-cards

There are a few issues with B&O speakers. Do you get sound from both the front and top speakers? Kernel 4.18 should have a patch that helps it in some cases, though. https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=189331

Re: Poor Bang Olufsen sound quality - Hp Envy 13 ad106nf

Hi,

Thanks for your quick reply.

Here are the steps I did so far:
1/

sudo bash -c "echo 'options snd-hda-intel model=auto position_fix=0' >> /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf"

As displayed in the https://doc.ubuntu-fr.org/b_and_o_play webpage in order to install the device

2/
Then I installed pulseaudio-equalizer and ran it through qpaeq command. Tweaking the equalizer did not make a great change.

Sorry for my initial messy post, the edited version should be fine.

Yes, I do get sound from the two speakers. It is not exactly the same problem as described in the linked webpage: the sound works, but there is no bass boost, which results in a low quality / high-pitched audio.

Re: Poor Bang Olufsen sound quality - Hp Envy 13 ad106nf

I've got basically the same laptop, and can report that bass is non-existent. When I first set Arch up it sounded much better though (circa October 2017). In the meantime I've been very busy and hardly use the speakers (preferring my bluetooth headset for private listening) so I can't say for sure when this started.

I will comment that the problem is almost definitely the bottom speakers not performing as they should, based on a Windows comparison that should be where the bass sound comes from.

There were a lot of sound quirks in Linux 4.19. I am considering this model and was wondering if one of the previous posters could check back in and give an update on whether this has been resolved with the new kernel.

I'm on 4.19.arch1-1 and it still has not been resolved (unless I'm missing some tweak). Bass is non-existant compared to windows.
