some time ago I reinstalled my archlinux and after this time I do have issues with my locale settings.
I am using Blackbox.
As file manager I use Thunar.
In Thunar I could see a folder "ąść" which was created as test.
The same folder in terminator (terminal which I use) looks like this: "''$'\304\205\305\233\304\207'"
The same in xterm
Thats very annoying behaviour making a lot of troubles.
When I run "locale" I do have this
[root@archlinux default]# locale
locale: Cannot set LC_CTYPE to default locale: No such file or directory
locale: Cannot set LC_MESSAGES to default locale: No such file or directory
locale: Cannot set LC_ALL to default locale: No such file or directory
LANG=en_US.UTF-8
LC_CTYPE="en_US.UTF-8"
LC_NUMERIC="en_US.UTF-8"
LC_TIME="en_US.UTF-8"
LC_COLLATE="en_US.UTF-8"
LC_MONETARY="en_US.UTF-8"
LC_MESSAGES="en_US.UTF-8"
LC_PAPER="en_US.UTF-8"
LC_NAME="en_US.UTF-8"
LC_ADDRESS="en_US.UTF-8"
LC_TELEPHONE="en_US.UTF-8"
LC_MEASUREMENT="en_US.UTF-8"
LC_IDENTIFICATION="en_US.UTF-8"
LC_ALL=When I run "localectl list-locales" or "localedef --list-archive" as dewscribed here https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Locale
I see empty result.
I already executed "locale-gen" but this does not help.
What can be wrong?
Trouble,shooting says "My terminal does not support UTF-8":
xterm - Run with the argument -u8 or configure resource xterm*utf8: 2.
what does it mean to configure resource and why before I never had such issue, though I was using exactly the same set up of programs (blackbox with xtem and terminator)

What is the output of the following
locale -a
grep -ve ^# /etc/locale.gen
cat /etc/locale.confOffline
here all commands (one returns empty result)
[root@archlinux rafal]# locale -a
locale: Cannot set LC_CTYPE to default locale: No such file or directory
locale: Cannot set LC_MESSAGES to default locale: No such file or directory
locale: Cannot set LC_COLLATE to default locale: No such file or directory
C
POSIX
[root@archlinux rafal]# grep -ve ^# /etc/locale.gen
[root@archlinux rafal]#
[root@archlinux rafal]# cat /etc/locale.conf
LANG=en_US.UTF-8Offline
one more comment. After installation I also run following command in order to be able to write polish characters:
localectl set-x11-keymap pl
thats why I could type "ąść". The problem is that it is not recognized in terminal. As I wrote in the first post. I do see everything correct in Thunar.

ok. problem solved.
What I did is following:
I edited the file /etc/locale.gen and uncommented two locales I need.
The I regenerated locales.
This tile it worked as it should:
[root@archlinux default]# locale-gen
Generating locales...
en_US.UTF-8... done
pl_PL.UTF-8... done
Generation complete.
Quite frankly I do no recall uncommenting anything in /etc/locale.gen when I did previous installations.
