Hey together , hope you're doing well?
tried to keep it short :sweat_smile:
tl.dr.: how to clone PC and Laptop 1:1 to each other and keep in sync, backup on NAS
i read the arch wiki, but i am not yet getting all of whats written there..
Please have a quick look and tell me what i forgot or if there is a better "best practise" for this :thinking:
The Goal:
* (NAS/Router <->) Desktop <-> Laptop <-> Phones
* Sync User folders, media and Backup all of them
* Enable Syncthing and Backup to run on boot, even if nobody logs in
* 1:1 clone Desktop <-> Laptop, whole partition except hardware-related like drivers
The Plan:
1. Desktop and Laptop
* Login to root user account GUI instead of own acount
* install syncthing from official Repos
* enable syncthing with command `# systemctl enable --now syncthing@root.service`
* start webUI and set up partition sync
* `#include syncthing_ignores.txt` which is in the root users `/root` Home folder
* Done, should start on boot without user login now
2. Phones
* Set up syncthing the usual way
* sync media with related users folders on PCs
* sync all with NAS for Backup
3. NAS/Router
* Set up Syncthing as normal user as it is running all the time anyway
* make Backup with Syncthings integrated "Staggered Versioning"
Is this fine to do as i plan it or is there a better way which will save me from headache over time?
Can i even sync the whole Partition with all folders like bin, etc, var...
which ones do i have to exclude for drivers and hardware related stuff which will be different?
Thank you for your help!

Eh? Why would you log into X as root? You can run syncthing as a system service and it will start after boot...

good point. just personal pref for creating that syncthing-ignore.txt and some other must have files in root home as i am not yet that fast with terminal
+it's not as cluttered as my main user
what about folders and files to exclude from the partition? really struggling with this one ![]()

If you want ignores-level granularity, just use rsync and a systemd timer.

I use syncthing with simple version control for my personal files (keepass, encrypted files, etc)..
I use rsync with systemd timer to back up my file system to an external drive. Syncthing would not be the best as it would constantly be working with every change.
Syncthing=simple files
rsync+timer = backups
