Desktop Environment Vs Window Manager?

I have been starting to look into installing Arch on my laptop and was windering what in the installation process would change if I decide not to use a desktop environment. What else would I need to download on my system if I go for a window manager?

Nothing.

The programs that you want to install.

All of the things that you need that a DE provides. Read the wiki pages on the various WMs and decide on one you want, install it and go from there.

Nothing.  You don't even need a window manager.  Unless of course you want one, then install the WM you want and install whatever other tools you want.

Re: Desktop Environment Vs Window Manager?

If you go for a desktop environment like gnome, mint, kde, etc...it usually provides all the various programs you need for basic functionality.

If you go for a tiling windows manager, then you need to grab yourself a file manager, monitor manager (arandr), menu manager (rofi, dmenu..etc) and some other stuff.

Aside from that, then you should get other applications like office suite, media player (some DE provide that)...etc.

*EDIT I should have said desktop environment instead of windows environment

None of those are window managers, they're all desktop environments.
