HiDPI display with external 1080p monitor using Nvidia drivers

For a good while I've been using the Intel integrated graphics drivers to drive my 4k laptop monitor and my external 1080p secondary monitor.

My go to solution was setting the Xft.dpi value to 282 in the Xresources file. This made everything on the external monitor way too big, which I solved with the following code scaling everything down:

xrandr --output DP-1-2-1 --scale 2x2 --right-of eDP-1-1

Scaling the display by 2x2 made it fit perfectly.

However, I was not satisfied with the performance and I was having a GPU that wasn't in use at all. Thus I decided to switch to Nvidia drivers.

Performance has a great boost, but I'm having some trouble configuring everything.
When I set the Xft.dpi value the same and not scale my external monitor, everything looks perfect on my 4k monitor but is way too big on my external monitor, just like with the Intel drivers.
However, when I run the same xrandr line, the external monitor gets scaled twice but also "exceeds"  the boundaries of the monitor where the intel drivers made it fit the monitor instead.

I also tried setting the DPI in /etc/X11/xorg.conf, but this screws up font sizes and some gui applications like Firefox.

How can I solve this? My goal is to have a dpi of 282 on my laptop monitor and scaling everything down on my 1080p monitor which worked with the Intel drivers but apparently works different with Nvidia. I've been wandering around this forum and Reddit but can't seem to find any working solution.
