I'm using an older driver as a model for a new serial device, and it looks like they've included support for kernels below v 2.60.19.
Would there be any benefit to keeping this legacy support? Is anyone even still using kernels this old?

Red hat 6 used that Kernel. Even Red Hat is on kernel 3.x on version 7.
My ASUS router uses a 2.6 kernel.
In general, no. Don't worry about it.
