Plasma: Second screen goes black during splash screen

Hi!

So I got a second screen weeks ago, and after defining it in my Xorg config it worked as expected. Then a few days ago this started:

During boot, a few seconds after the Plasma splash displays on both screens, the second one goes black. It still has signal, just doesn't display anything. The only way I found to fix it is by switching to another TTY and then back.

However, many times a few seconds after Plasma comes back the second screen goes black again. I usually have to repeat this 2-3 times until it sticks - today it took 8. Even worse, every time I do it there is a chance the whole PC will freeze up forcing me to hardware reset.

Didn't attach any logs because I don't even know what to look at.

I just found this old thread describing the same phenomena with KDE 4, but no idea if the causes are related: https://forum.kde.org/viewtopic.php?f=66&t=119728

Any ideas? Thanks in advance!

Re: Plasma: Second screen goes black during splash screen

This drives me mad... This morning I had to hardware reset the PC FOUR times because of this. sad

Here is my Xorg log from just after Plasma finished loading and the second screen is still black:

Sadly I couldn1t get the log from after switching desktops to fix it because it froze the PC every time, and after the 4th reset the second screen didn't go black and I just left it that way so I can finally use the PC. Also, tried of suspending composition has any effect, but it doesn't.

Can you post your xorg config? FWIW if you are setting up your screens statically within a xorg.conf anyway, you might want to disable KDE's kscreen daemon, as that might bite itself with your static setup.  Also FWIW post a journalctl -b while reproducing the issue.

Screen config under xorg.conf.d: https://pastebin.com/5HavfBsf
Output of journalctl --boot=-1: https://pastebin.com/bumTzQFP

Kscreen stopped interfering once I added the Xorg config so I left it alone because I may need it in the future. And as said, that worked for weeks without issue. I just uninstalled kscreen now, we will see if that makes a difference.

Re: Plasma: Second screen goes black during splash screen

Fresh logs from this morning:

Xorg log: https://pastebin.com/pZf04U0V
Journalctl -b: https://pastebin.com/VhD3hXAY

Deleting kscreen didn't fix the issue but it screwed up my screen arrangement. Despite being defined in my conf file, my second screen is again placed on the right of my main instead of the left where it should be. sad But this is likely unrelated. Plasma is just a piece of crap when it comes to handling more than one screens. The fun thing is, installing kscreen again made my screens instantly snap back to their proper place. Huh...

Re: Plasma: Second screen goes black during splash screen

Sorry to bump the thread but I'm getting desperate. This morning it took like 6 tty switch to get it work, now it took 9, it takes more every time.

And I don't even know where else to post because I don't know what component has the problem. Xorg? Xrandr? Plasma? nVidia? Something else? hmm

Re: Plasma: Second screen goes black during splash screen

I'm not sure if this is related but I started having issues with second monitor (external monitor is primary and laptop monitor is secondary for me) in plasma several days ago (I believe that this started happening after upgrade of KDE Frameworks to version 5.52.0).
I don't have issues with splash screen, however I have constant graphic artefacts on secondary (laptop) screen and applications freeze on it (especially Chromium). I'm using Intel graphics card only. I wasn't able to detect the culprit unfortunately.

So... literally all of your symptoms are completely different, including the time it started happening... No, I don't think they are related. neutral

As for me, things just got real weird... I start to think it maybe a video card/driver or monitor issue.

So few days ago I reorganized my cables while the PC was off, re-plugging everything, and this made no difference. However, after turning on and the black screen happened again, I thought let's try unplugging and re-plugging the HDMI cable of the affected screen. This fixed it.

After that for a few days, the monitor just worked properly, the issue didn't happen again.

Then since yesterday, a slightly different issue started happening: Before X even starts, the second monitor keeps turning on and off constantly. It's on for just a moment, I can see the image it should display for a blink, then it turns off, and this repeats infinitely until I re-plug the HDMI cable again.

Also, I did a system upgrade sometimes yesterday, I believe this new issue started after that, and I also believe there was an update to the nVidia blob.

Fresh logs from this morning, including the re-plugging of HDMI to fix the on and off screen:

Re: Plasma: Second screen goes black during splash screen

OK What the fuck? This time unplugging and re-plugging my USB keyboard fixed it the same way re-plugging the HDMI did before.

Could it be a power management issue? Maybe two screens is too much for my power supply?

Re: Plasma: Second screen goes black during splash screen

So for anyone reading this:

The second screen stopped working entirely, it just infinitely turns on and off from the moment the PC is turned on, which suggests a faulty capacitor. So clearly a hardware issue now, let's just hope it's in the screen and not my graphics card.
