Gnome session on wayland/nvidia: crashes when changing zoom

With the latest nvidia proprietary drivers, I am able to start a wayland session using "XDG_SESSION_TYPE=wayland exec dbus-run-session gnome-session". I have written a script with this content, chmod +x and pointed to it in the gnome session.

However, as soon as I go into the gnome display settings (obviously can't start nvidia-settings because it is expecting to be xorg), and change the magnification from 200% to 100%, the system crashes. It renders the entire desktop as correct resolution and magnification, but the display is frozen. I see the message asking if I want to change back in 20 seconds, but the timer is frozen. I can ssh into the system and kill the Xwayland process. This drops me back to gdm.

I was wondering where I can get logs of this incident to debug. It seems that Xorg.log won't be very useful.

Edit: probably same as https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/mutter/issues/198
