At the login screen if I go to tty2 and use startx then the Xorg session starts without issues. But when I select from GDM "Gnome on Xorg" and try to log in it brings me back to the login. My .xinitrc is this
#!/bin/sh
userresources=$HOME/.Xresources
usermodmap=$HOME/.Xmodmap
sysresources=/etc/X11/xinit/.Xresources
sysmodmap=/etc/X11/xinit/.Xmodmap
# merge in defaults and keymaps
if [ -f $sysresources ]; then
xrdb -merge $sysresources

if [ -f $sysmodmap ]; then
xmodmap $sysmodmap

if [ -f "$userresources" ]; then
xrdb -merge "$userresources"

if [ -f "$usermodmap" ]; then
xmodmap "$usermodmap"
fi
# start some nice programs
if [ -d /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc.d ] ; then
for f in /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc.d/?*.sh ; do
[ -x "$f" ] && . "$f"
done
unset f

Maybe some GDM switch over bug, do you use wayland actively in any shape, or would configuring GDM to simply use xorg itself be sufficient?

I tried the WaylandEnable=false but then it would only try to login with Xorg and the same behavior happens (back to login). I was using wayland most of the time since it is newer than X, but nothing more than that. It just annoys me that gdm behaves like this. For the time being I can keep on using wayland and go through TTY and startx if I want Xorg, but I was hopping for an easy solution like an edit in a conf or something like that.
