Can't boot from a cloned disk

I've recently been filling up my hard disk so I bought a 500GB SSD to replace my 250GB.
I loaded swapped the drives over, loaded up a liveUSB and copied the entire drive using dd.  So my partition table should still be the same.

I tried booting up with the newwly flashed disk in the laptop, grub starts, linux starts to boot and then boot gets stuck on a single flashing line.  It seems to be pretty late in the boot so I don't know if it's failing to start the GUI.

I swapped the old drive back in, which should be byte for byte identical, and the system boots fine.

Does anyone have any ideas?
