OK, I admit it. I don't know what DBUS is or what it does, but I'm using it anyway. Well, maybe I'm not that hopeless, but anyway.
If I've got dbus in my DAEMONS list in rc.conf do I also need to have it in my .xinitrc?
Right now I am running it as a daemon and I've got exec dbus-launch --exit-with-session gnome-session in my .xinitrc. Am I overdoing it?
What does dbus do, anyway?

You're not overdoing it, Gnome also needs a dbus-session running as user to work properly.
(dbus provides a way for applications to communicate with each other, like KDE's DCOP.)
