Installing programs on root partition ?

Hi,

My home folder is installed on an HDD. The root partition on the SSD.

I want to move some programs on the SSD to run them faster.

How should I perform this operation in a way that won't threaten the security of my system.

Regards

Re: Installing programs on root partition ?

All your programs (assuming they were a pacman package at one point in time) are installed into the root partition, did you mix something up here?

Re: Installing programs on root partition ?

Thanks for the quick reply

I'm confused about the manually installed package, for instance through a makepkg -si
After some weeks of use, i found myself with several folders generated by these operations.
So i've moved them to a "Programs" folder within the home partition.

Should i relocate these folders ?

More generally i'd look into a clear article on the proper way to manually install and manage programs in unix based systems ?

My /bin looks like a mess, there is all sort of libraries, scripts and executable files, but that's just the result of me leaving the programs install themselves wherever they want to.

Is there a way to reorganize it, or do i have to assume that all linux users have their /bin folder set this way which i hope is not the case...

https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Ar … g_packages

AUR or pacman maintained packages should not dump random s…tuff somewhere - if you install stuff in other ways, you'll have to detail  "how" but in general it's not a good idea unless you actually know what you and the installer are doing - what does not seem to be the case here.

Temporary sources required to build packages can just be deleted after the package installation, though I found that keeping them
1. helps to remember what packages untracked by pacman are flying around on your installation
2. esp. w/ git based packages update require less network I/O (for me and the server)

Are you new to Linux?  Not trying to insult you.  You cannot just move files around all willy-nilly in Linux.  You specify where it will be installed when the package is compiled... you cannot move it from there.

Not sure how your /bin got this way.  Mine is almost all executables or links to executables in other folders.

Re: Installing programs on root partition ?

Well that statement isn't really correct just like that, you can definitely move stuff around if need be, however you'd usually have a good reason and know what you are doing to do so.

@FeatherInk what makes you think that having executables in /bin is a bad idea? As already mentioned the build files left over by makepkg can be removed after package installation, if need be.  You will want to read the entirety of that page linked by seth as it should elaborate on what exactly is happening.

Re: Installing programs on root partition ?

Is there a chance that you are looking at the wrong thing. Perhaps you are looking at build directories, rather than where the built package got installed?
