Ctrl-C and Ctrl-V stopped working under KDE Plasma

Today I did a system upgrade. After reboot my Ctrl-C and Ctrl-V shortcuts stopped working.

I select the text, pres the Ctrl-C or Ctrl-V and nothing happens. If I right click the selected text and select Copy or Paste it works. It looks like just those two keybindings does not work.
I also looked it up in Standard Shortcuts Plasma settings. Copy and Past shortcuts are set to Ctrl-C and Ctrl-V. Even if I change them, change makes no effect, neither new or old shortcuts work.

Only two application that can handle copy and paste shortcuts are Emacs (because it implements that internally and Konsole that does not use the standard shortcuts for copy and paste)

Here is the list of packages that I upgraded (from my pacman.log). Does anyone see any suspicious package that I should try to downgrade?

Re: Ctrl-C and Ctrl-V stopped working under KDE Plasma

OK, changed. Thank you.

Why did you move the question to Newby Corner? I don't think it belongs here, it is related either to libinput/libxi or kwin/wayland or something else in Plasma.

If it's so, can I delete this question and post it again in the appropriate section with the appropriate code formatting?

No. People can still see the topic in the New Posts filter, which is how most contributors read the boards.

Re: Ctrl-C and Ctrl-V stopped working under KDE Plasma

related either to libinput/libxi or kwin/wayland

If you don't know whether you're running X11 or wayland, we better remain in the NC and resolve this first:

loginctl session-status

If it's X11, check

xev -event keyboard

and check what input is generated for ctrl+c/ctrl+v

Also try this outside plasma (ie. avoid the plasma clipboard manager applet)

Re: Ctrl-C and Ctrl-V stopped working under KDE Plasma

So the events are generated, they're just not properly handled by the client
Wild guess: "state 0x4" - try w/ numlock on.

Edit, sorry just noticed you're not OP - still try the numlock variantion and please specify which clients are affected.

Re: Ctrl-C and Ctrl-V stopped working under KDE Plasma

In my case this is happening on a laptop (Sony Vaio Pro SVP-1321) so there's no numeric lock in the keyboard that I can toggle.

As for the affected applications, for me it doesn't paste on anything that I've tried: SublimeText3, Firefox, Chromium, Yakuake or Konsole (trying both with the regular Ctrl+V and the alternative Shift+Insert shortcuts).
The paste with "middle click" works though.

Re: Ctrl-C and Ctrl-V stopped working under KDE Plasma

Is this a KDE/plasma desktop environment (w/ either plasmashell or klipper running)?

Re: Ctrl-C and Ctrl-V stopped working under KDE Plasma

Yes, same as OP with both plasmashell and klipper as the clipboard manager
plasma version: 5.14.3
KDE frameworks version: 5.52.0
Qt version: 5.11.2

Re: Ctrl-C and Ctrl-V stopped working under KDE Plasma

Well, try w/o them. klipper and the plasmashell applet interfer w/ the clipboard by design.
Bonus points if this is a race condition between them and neither does its job…

Re: Ctrl-C and Ctrl-V stopped working under KDE Plasma

I use Xorg.

Gooler is right, only Ctrl-v does not work, Ctrl-c does work as expected

xev -event keyboard

shows that all the Ctrl-v events are generated correctly.

I really do not know how to disable Klipper and honestly have no clue how to interpret "klipper and the plasmashell applet interfer w/ the clipboard by design" . What I see is that Klipper is a part of KDE Plasma and was always installed as it is part of extra/plasma-workspace package.
If anyone knows how to disable klipper I would appreciate the help.

Unfortunately, no one from KDE forum responds to my question for more than a week.

Re: Ctrl-C and Ctrl-V stopped working under KDE Plasma

Open a konsole and simply kill the klipper and plasmashell processes (the latter provides desktop and taskbar, so brace yourself - it's gonna be ok ;-)
Ensure they're gone from the process list and then see whether copy+paste becomes functional as expected.
If so, restart klipper and see whether  copy+paste remains functional.
If so, kill klipper again, restart plasmashell and see whether  copy+paste remains functional.
If so, restart klipper (alongside plasmashell) and see whether  copy+paste remains functional.
If so, the best I can tell you is to keep klipper disabled, I've no idea to turn off the c&p thing  in the plasmashell process.

Re: Ctrl-C and Ctrl-V stopped working under KDE Plasma

Klipper does not exist as a process in my system.

ps -A | grep klipper

does not return anything.
I disabled Klipper from System Tray Settings, rebooted and problem is still present.
So, one thing is clear now, it has nothing to do with Klipper.

I have also noticed that Ctrl-v keystroke is not even registered in Emacs, it acts like I do not type anything.

xev -event keyboard

registers Ctrl-v correctly.
Another silly thing is that Shift-Insert pastes correctly, it's only Ctr-v that does not get registered by applications.

Is there anyone who is more familiar with Plasma or stuff around input system in general?

Re: Ctrl-C and Ctrl-V stopped working under KDE Plasma

Does shift+insert work in all kinds of clients or just konsole? (Gooler's comment #10 suggested otherwise)

shift+insert

works in all the applications.

Re: Ctrl-C and Ctrl-V stopped working under KDE Plasma

Then it's not the clipboard for sure - the shortcuts are platform dependent (w/ shift+del, ins & ctrl+ins being the original IBM shortcuts, ctrl+c,x,v is windows)
Random guess:

printenv

Also try changing the UI style

QT_STYLE_OVERRIDE=Fusion kwrite

Re: Ctrl-C and Ctrl-V stopped working under KDE Plasma

Which particular env variable is related to this? What do you suspect to?
Again, I did not install KDE or Plasma now. They are on my system for more than 2 years (on the same machine of course). Nothing has changed, no settings have changed, nothing. This happened after an update.
Normally, a new version of a package is responsible for this. Unfortunately, I am not able to locate the package.
The essence of my question is: What is the package in Arch that is responsible for input shortcuts? Is there anything in KDE/Plasma that overrides the settings?

It most likely has something to do with KDE/Plasma since even

Shift+Insert

does not work in Kate (KDE's default text editor). To further depict the mess that took over after the update: If I change paste shortcut through standard shortcuts settings to something different like:

Ctrl+/

then it works in Kate but it still does not work in Chromium, where only

Shift+Insert

works. Weird enough,

Shift+Insert

is not listed as shortcut anywhere, I can even add a new shortcut with that keystroke in standard shortcut settings without any conflict being reported (usually it reports the conflicts in keystrokes).

My suspicion falls to the following: some layer responsible for handling keystrokes on lower levels sends the correct keystroke to KDE (I checked it using  xev -event keyboard and even standard shortcuts settings in Plasma detects Ctrl+V as it is). KDE then does some internal remapping before it executes the command associate to the keystroke. Ctrl+Insert is hard-coded somewhere in the highest layers as a paste command and thus it always works. Ctrl+V is hard-coded to something else or is non properly hard-coded to the paste command and thus it gets lost in the translation resulting in Ctrl-V keystroke being ignored.

This should be the question for KDE forum but no one responds there for more than 3 weeks nor I can find any help on their Reddit. KDE/Plasma's community has shown to be pretty inactive in my case, not only for this question but for all the questions that I ever had. If anyone knows another communication channel that one can use to reach someone from KDE's community, please let me know.

Re: Ctrl-C and Ctrl-V stopped working under KDE Plasma

Qt, any platform theme or style plugin - therefore the relevant environment variables PLUS things I might only recognize when I see them.
Chromium isn't a KDE or even Qt application and those shortcut configs do not impact it.

The only game changer would be if this was indeed a wayland session and you merely believe it to be xorg w/o checking (you didn't provide the requested output…) - xev would then run on xwayland and be completely meaningless, so would a bunch of other clients. ctrl+insert isn't generally hardcoded (though some specific clients might or not do so - as much as hardcode random other shortcuts; this is not what you're dealing w/ here), the local shortcuts in Qt are platform dependent.

It does affect Chromium. Ctrl+V does not work in Chromium and it worked prior to the update, so it obviously affects.

It is xorg. As you can see in the bottom messages, QT "cannot set X11 selection owner", it confuses windows somehow.

I am obviously not the only one who experiences this bug according to this, but it doesn't look like anybody cares.

Re: Ctrl-C and Ctrl-V stopped working under KDE Plasma

I meant that the KDE settings do not apply to chromium.

"Cannot set X11 selection owner" is probably the cause, compile

#include <stdio.h>
#include <X11/Xlib.h>

int main(int argc, char **argv) {
    Display *dpy = XOpenDisplay(NULL);
    char *clippy[] = { "PRIMARY", "SECONDARY", "CLIPBOARD", "FOOBAR" };
    for (int i = 0; i < 4; ++i) {
        printf("%d\n", XGetSelectionOwner(dpy, XInternAtom(dpy, clippy[i], False)));
    }
}

with

gcc -lX11 -o dumpclippy dumpclippy.c

and run

xwininfo -int -id 123456; xprop -id 123456

for every line that's not "0" - it should tell us what *has* the selection owners and might provide an idea why the transfer fails.
