Keyboard keys stopped working

Two keys on my laptop (late 2015 Dell xps 13), esc and | , have stopped working. They are not showing neither in showkey nor in xev. As they worked before the last reboot I don't think this is a hardware issue per se, but I'm not sure how to investigate this further.

Boot from a live distro and try and reproduce.

Tested with Ubuntu 18.04 live usb: same problem, keys not working. Is there anything else worth checking or must I accept keys randomly having stopped working ?

Does the keyboard work in the bootloader or UEFI?

I tried in the boot setup and the 'vertical bar' key doesn't seem to work there either. 'Esc' and 'left alt' I wasn't able to test but probably the same.
