High temperature while the lid is closed

Hi there,

Although my laptop suspends when the lid is closed, it gets really hot, spends lots of battery. When I come home after work, I my laptop feels like it's about to explode from high temperature. I wonder if this is a common & known issue, and would love to hear your thoughts & solutions.

Thanks
Azer

Re: High temperature while the lid is closed

It's not.

Are you certain you are suspending and not just blanking the screen? Which laptop exactly? Output of

sudo journalctl -b

after reproduction of the issue? Did you actually check the temp with e.g. lm-sensors on whether it is out of the norm?

Re: High temperature while the lid is closed

Thanks for the answer. Here is the output of `journalctl -b` after closing the lid. By the way, I noticed that the laptop is turning on and off while the lid is closed. It's Macbook Pro 2015, so I can see the Apple logo light turning on when lid is closed. It's weird.

Please use [ code ] and not [ quote ] tags in the future, I've fixed the post for now.

That log is truncated by your pager, redirect into a file or use --no-pager for the entire output.

Re: High temperature while the lid is closed

Ok, I think I'm doing it right this time. I closed the lid for a only a minute, and I saw the laptop light opening/closing two times while the lid was closed.

Re: High temperature while the lid is closed

You are constantly suspending and immediately waking up again only to suspend again a few seconds after, what exactly is that battery-monitor service? It seems to be pretty key.

Re: High temperature while the lid is closed

Pretty sure closing the lid is pressing on a key physically? Try to run manually start a suspend with the lid open and see if that works as expected.

Re: High temperature while the lid is closed

V1del, battery monitor is my custom service to show low battery notifications. it runs every 10 seconds. I would expect that service to be paused when the system is suspended, but it keeps running according to the logs.

This is the configuration I use for battery monitoring service:

[Unit]
Description=Monitor battery

[Service]
Type=simple
ExecStart=/bin/bash /home/azer/.happy-desktop/bin/monitor-battery
Environment=DISPLAY=:0
Environment=XAUTHORITY=%h/.Xauthority
Environment=DBUS_SESSION_BUS_ADDRESS=unix:path=/run/user/1000/bus
Restart=always
RestartSec=10
User=azer

[Install]
WantedBy=multi-user.target

Re: High temperature while the lid is closed

I've changed the service to use timers, removing `Restart=` lines. Here is the new config:

[Unit]
Description=Monitor battery

[Service]
Type=simple
ExecStart=/bin/bash /home/azer/.happy-desktop/bin/monitor-battery
Environment=DISPLAY=:0
Environment=XAUTHORITY=%h/.Xauthority
Environment=DBUS_SESSION_BUS_ADDRESS=unix:path=/run/user/1000/bus
User=azer

[Install]
WantedBy=multi-user.target

and the timer:

[Timer]
OnUnitInactiveSec=10

[Install]
WantedBy=timers.target

The service works, but it works *after suspend*, and wakes up the system while the lid is closed. systemd seems really complicated, can't figure out how to get this service run the way I expect...

Re: High temperature while the lid is closed

In general, don't run it as a system service, all the environment you are painstakingly setting up here comes included with an user service (remove everything after the ExecStart= line) furthermore as this is a quick running command rather than an actual service, you might want to use Type=oneshot instead. Place the unit file and the associated timer file at one of the appropriate spots for user services and use

systemctl --user

to start/enable and check the status.

That said, it still isn't entirely clear if that really is the cause for the wakeups, did you try ngoonee's suggestion? Or did you already confirm the service to be the cause by disabling it and not being able to reproduce anymore? From what I'm reading unless WakeSystem=true is set this shouldn't happen. Might also be a quirk with Mac ACPI tables if this happens anyway.
