Hello,
I recently installed Arch on my Dell XPS 13 (9360). I am dualbooting Windows and used syslinux for the boot loader. Unfortunately, at some point I was apparently confused with how the mounting worked, and ended up with two identical mounting points, one at / and one at /boot. I would ideally like to have a single mount point at /, since I have been running into issues updating the kernel in this current scheme. I feel like it is as simple as unmounting one of the directories, but I just want to make sure before I lose any data. Thank you in advance. I've included the ls for /, /boot, and /boot/boot as well as my /etc/fstab file.
➜ / ls
bin home lib64 proc srv var
boot initramfs-linux-fallback.img lost+found root sys vmlinuz-linux
dev initramfs-linux.img mnt run tmp
etc lib opt sbin usr
➜ /boot ls
bin home lib64 proc srv var
boot initramfs-linux-fallback.img lost+found root sys vmlinuz-linux
dev initramfs-linux.img mnt run tmp
etc lib
➜ /boot/boot ls
initramfs-linux-fallback.img syslinux
initramfs-linux.img vmlinuz-linux
➜ ~ cat /etc/fstab

well... that looks broken af. not sure how u can do it unless you move /boot to / and /boot/boot to /boot... might be broken though. nope upon further looking id suggest starting over

If you comment out the entry for /boot in the fstab and reboot that should remove the directory recursion.
Then you can compare the contents of / and the contents of /boot.
Please use code tags for commands and their outputs.

would it not be wiser to just wipe clean n start over? i just feel like that can cause further issues tbh

If only initramfs-linux-fallback.img, initramfs-linux.img and vmlinuz-linux have been duplicated from a kernel upgrade
then removing those three files and reinstalling the linux package to ensure the versions in /boot are the recent versions seems simpler to me.

yea but looks like home and others are on boot...
and on root

It is the nesting
# dd if=/dev/zero of=tempfile.img bs=1M count=1
# mkdir mntpnt
# cd mntpnt/
# mkdir a b c boot
# cd ..
# ls mntpnt
a b boot c lost+found
# ls mntpnt/boot
# mount -o loop tempfile.img mntpnt/boot
# ls mntpnt/boot
a b boot c lost+found
# ls mntpnt/boot/bootLast edited by loqs (2018-12-16 03:42:55)
