Not detecting external display (hybrid system)

My computer does not detect an external monitor (probably because the hdmi port is connected to my NVIDIA card. For some reasons my NVIDIA does not work.

It is worth noticing that my secondary display used to work perfectly, but after fixing some issues with my wm it stopped working.
I used to have the same problem when I installed arch on my pc, the problem was fixed by uninstalling Bumblebee.

Re: Not detecting external display (hybrid system)

Probably relevant: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=237800

_Benjamin753, your posts contains absolutely no useful information.
Please read http://www.catb.org/esr/faqs/smart-questions.html

Afterwards ensure to read through https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/NVIDIA_Optimus and all sublinks, then elaborate on the setup and "does not detect" (by what indication) and "after fixing some issues with my wm"
dmesg, journal and xorg log will be relevant information.
But first: read those links..

Re: Not detecting external display (hybrid system)

The post you are referring to is a post I made a few months ago when I had a similar problem.

Then I uninstalled bumblebee which did the trick (probably because my bumblebee was blocking my nvidia card).
At this moment I don't have bumblebee installed so that cannot be the problem.
I'm trying to reinstall my nvidia drivers, but when I try to make the configuration file it doesn't find the X configuration file:

$ nvidia-xconfig

WARNING: Unable to locate/open X configuration file.
WARNING: Unable to parse X.Org version string.
ERROR: Unable to write to directory '/etc/X11'.

When I run this command with sudo my pc freezes.

I fixed the issues with my WM some time ago by reinstalling i3. The reason for the issues was a BIOS update which screwed some things up (like my WM and boothloader). Do you think the BIOS update is the cause of my troubles?

Re: Not detecting external display (hybrid system)

I think you've still not provided any relevant information.
Neither about your approach to setup the optimus system (besides *not* being bumblebee) nor the relevant logs I even listed… you can add lspci to the list.

Also nvidia-xconfig will *FOR SURE* mess up an optimus system, so don't bother trying. Static xorg configs are extremely rare usecases anyway.

Re: Not detecting external display (hybrid system)

It seems that I have 2 logs for Xorg, Xorg.1 is probably the log from before the reinstallation.
I also still have the var file of bumblebee (I tried to enable my NVidia through bumblebee but without succes). Bumblebee has been uninstalled since.

Re: Not detecting external display (hybrid system)

You're running the modesetting driver on the intel chip. The nvidia GPU is not in use and the most likely cause for your problem is that the external output is wired to the intel GPU.
You won't get around invoking and properly setting up the nvidia GPU. See eg. https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Bu … VIDIA_chip

Re: Not detecting external display (hybrid system)

I fixed the problem by reinstalling and reconfiguring Nouveau which worked for one day.
Now when I modprobe Nouveau my pc freezes when I run xrandr (before modprobing nouveau xrandr works fine).

Any ideas

I can't give you my dmesg as I have to restart my pc when it freezes.

Re: Not detecting external display (hybrid system)

reinstalling and reconfiguring Nouveau

You'll also have to elaborate on that, in particular whether you're using it alongside bumblebee (and notably bbswitch)

There's also https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/No … le_Invalid ie. lockups w/ nouveau are not unheard of…

Re: Not detecting external display (hybrid system)

I checked the systemctl journal but it doesn't give any logs of it

I never reinstalles bumblebee so I am not using bumblebee or bbswitch.

Re: Not detecting external display (hybrid system)

So then how exactly do you keep the GPUs apart…

You can also run "dmesg -w", provoke the freeze and make a photo of the output.

And, once again, your best chance here is to properly set up the nvidia GPU. See eg. https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Bu … VIDIA_chip

Re: Not detecting external display (hybrid system)

I'm trying to provoke the freeze again but everything seems to be working fine now (though I didn't change anything).

this is the dmsg after modprobing nvidia and enabling second monitor via aRandr.

Re: Not detecting external display (hybrid system)

You didn't modprobe nvidia, but nouveau…
dmesg will (at best) only be interesting when things fail.
You can still expect far better performance w/ the nvidia driver (compared to nouveau)
