Hello everyone!
I was wondering if it is possible to get OpenGL 4.x to work on my GPU. It is an old ATI HD 5770 and I'm sure it supports 4.3, but my system says OpenGL version is 3.1. I need the 4.1 to make some native Steam games to work (Divinity Original Sin, for instance). By the way I'm using the LTS Kernel, not sure if it has something to do with it.

Try the proprietary drivers. The open source driver GL level might be limited for this card.

Note that there's a difference between OpenGL and OpenGL core profile. Make sure you check both as later versions might only be available when using a core profile, run "glxinfo -B" to get this info (it's in the mesa-demos package, so install that). The open drivers have for a long time avoided adding support for compatibility profiles, which allow versions higher than 3.0 without a core profile. There is support for compatibility profiles now, but it might be limited to the radeonsi driver, and your GPU is too old for that, your GPU uses the older r600 driver.
That said, your GPU doesn't do fp64 and the open drivers don't yet have fake fp64 support, so you're limited to at most 3.3 even with core profiles. You can try overriding the versions reported, it might make games work, because nothing out there actually uses fp64
export MESA_GL_VERSION_OVERRIDE=4.3 MESA_GLSL_VERSION_OVERRIDE=430@Maniaxx: The proprietary driver doesn't support GPUs this old. Unless you mean the old fglrx/catalyst driver, in which case good luck getting that to run, I personally wouldn't bother.

I did try to install the old proprietary driver some time ago and it's impossible. Lots of errors happen when I try to sync the repos.

Have you tried the overrides I mentioned? Just run "MESA_GL_VERSION_OVERRIDE=4.3 MESA_GLSL_VERSION_OVERRIDE=430 glxinfo -B", it should work. No idea how to get the overrides working with Steam though, but Google probably knows. A quick search shows me you can set launch options somewhere in Steam, you add those two overrides there.
