[Solved] [Audio] No sound in neew Arch installation.

Hello everyone,
I just installed Arch and i3 on my laptop computer, and I have no sound at all...
I first tried Alsa and then I added Pulse audio, but it still doesn't work...

The only card that is detected by softwares like vlc is a virtual one.

Here are the most frequently asked command for this kind of issues (my laptop is in French, if you need the results in English, I can translate)

aplay -l:

Does it show  different cards when you enter F6 in alsamixer?

Hello, thank you for your help!

Yes, I have: "0  HDA Intel HDMI" and "1  HDA Intel PCH", but neither one works.

Re: [Solved] [Audio] No sound in neew Arch installation.

And asound.conf?
You can check if testing the speakers -> speaker-test -c 2 - gives you an error message.
My guess is it's between Alsa and Pulse.
What does cat /proc/asound/pcm give you?

Re: [Solved] [Audio] No sound in neew Arch installation.

I had an error, but I solved it by changing the default card  (I post the exact code as soon as I am at home) but after I solved it, the speaker-test command works, but the dummy interface is still the only one displayed on pavucontrol.

EDITS: Here is the code that I added to /usr/share/alsa/alsa.conf:

    pcm.!default {
        type hw
        card 1
    }

    ctl.!default {
        type hw
        card 1
    }

And here is the return of cat /proc/asound/pcm:

00-03: HDMI 0 : HDMI 0 : playback 1
00-07: HDMI 1 : HDMI 1 : playback 1
00-08: HDMI 2 : HDMI 2 : playback 1
00-09: HDMI 3 : HDMI 3 : playback 1
00-10: HDMI 4 : HDMI 4 : playback 1
01-00: ALC236 Analog : ALC236 Analog : playback 1 : capture 1

Re: [Solved] [Audio] No sound in neew Arch installation.

pulseaudio-alsa already installed? You probably have to define pulse in your asound.conf
Run aplay -L | grep :CARD output and compare if default and sysdefault cards are the same. The default card is what you use for asound conf.
Try killing pulse momentarily and run the speaker test so we can see if alsa makes an output.
As an example, this is my asound.conf. Mine however is in /etc not in /usr/share/... since I have a system-wide setup. That might have a bearing as well I don't know. My main output is an external DAC

## Use DAC by default
pcm.!default {
    type hw
    card 0
    slave {
        type pulse
        fallback "sysdefault"
        hint {
            show on
            description "Default ALSA Output (currently PulseAudio Sound Server)"
        }
    }
}

ctl.!default {
    type hw
    card 0
    slave {
        type pulse
        fallback "sysdefault"
    }
}

Re: [Solved] [Audio] No sound in neew Arch installation.

EDITS: Here is the code that I added to /usr/share/alsa/alsa.conf:

What I meant is either ~/.asoundrc  or /etc/asound.conf. You don't need anything to do in alsa.conf and erase everything you've added to that file and create either version of asound.conf.
ALSA
Pulse

Re: [Solved] [Audio] No sound in neew Arch installation.

So:

I installed pulseaudio-alsa but no changes, Do I need to do anything (exept restarting)?

Here is the aplay -L | grep :CARD:

hdmi:CARD=HDMI,DEV=0
hdmi:CARD=HDMI,DEV=1
hdmi:CARD=HDMI,DEV=2
hdmi:CARD=HDMI,DEV=3
hdmi:CARD=HDMI,DEV=4
usbstream:CARD=HDMI
sysdefault:CARD=PCH
front:CARD=PCH,DEV=0
surround21:CARD=PCH,DEV=0
surround40:CARD=PCH,DEV=0
surround41:CARD=PCH,DEV=0
surround50:CARD=PCH,DEV=0
surround51:CARD=PCH,DEV=0
surround71:CARD=PCH,DEV=0
usbstream:CARD=PCH

I moved the lines I added in alsa.conf to /etc/asound.conf, and tried your configuration (I changed the card number to 1), but it seems that the slave field is not recognized. Do I need to set it up elsewhere?

The sound still don't work, and I still have the dummy interface. I have two questions:
- Could the fact that I am always forced to do "audiopulse --start" after reboot (either way, pavucontrol does not display anything) be related to my problem?
- I read on the pulseaudio troubleshooting page that if the speake-test works but that I only have dummy interfaces, that could mean that there are problems with polkit (I did not installed It, I don't know if it is required). Could It be the problem and if yes, how to solve it?

Once again thank you for your tie and help!

Re: [Solved] [Audio] No sound in neew Arch installation.

You can try this asound.conf configuration:

# Use PulseAudio by default
pcm.!default {
  type pulse
  fallback "sysdefault"
  hint {
    show on
    description "Default ALSA Output (currently PulseAudio Sound Server)"
  }
}

ctl.!default {
  type pulse

and maybe restart. Run alsamixer again and see if ALSA starts using Pulse as default.

To answer your question, you shouldn't start pulse manually. You should have a file pulseaudio.desktop at /etc/xdg/autostart/ that enables it at startup.
And my feeling is yes, polkit might have a bearing on the problem. Can you post the url where that was mentioned?
You can run the debug script alsa-info.sh and check again the module state. Post the output here for everyone to see.
You should really try to make the speaker test work first. Modules seem ok but why doesn't the sound reach your speakers?

Re: [Solved] [Audio] No sound in neew Arch installation.

How are you starting you environment, logging in? During an active playback attempt what are the outputs of

sudo fuser -v /dev/snd/*
amixer -c1
pacmd list-cards
pacmd list-sinks
pacmd list-sink-inputs

Re: [Solved] [Audio] No sound in neew Arch installation.

If I use your suggestion, I get the error: "ALSA lib pcm_dmix.c:1099:(snd_pcm_dmix_open) unable to open slave" an then it tells me no such file or directory. And if I add the lines about the card, it does not recognize the card field.

When I run alsamixer, I don't see any differences with what it was before. I am supposed to?

I found as you said a pulseaudio.desktop file but if I don't run "pulseaudio --start" manually, pavucontrol does not work.
Here is the link you asked for: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Pu … t_detected (but I made ome mistakes in my post, If speaker-test works, this is what the wiki advices: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Ad … #No_output).

And for the alsa-info: https://pastebin.com/9KhcJJDf

Re: [Solved] [Audio] No sound in neew Arch installation.

Eratum: I did not notice that the video I had lauched on VLC had ended. I post here the true return.

1 sink input(s) available.
    index: 1
	driver: <protocol-native.c>
	flags: START_CORKED FIX_RATE
	state: RUNNING
	sink: 0 <auto_null>
	volume: front-left: 65536 / 100% / 0,00 dB,   front-right: 65536 / 100% / 0,00 dB
	        balance 0,00
	muted: no
	current latency: 384,00 ms
	requested latency: 40,00 ms
	sample spec: float32le 2ch 24000Hz
	channel map: front-left,front-right
	             Stéréo
	resample method: speex-float-1
	module: 10
	client: 1 <VLC media player (LibVLC 3.0.4)>
	properties:
		media.role = "video"
		media.name = "audio stream"
		application.name = "VLC media player (LibVLC 3.0.4)"
		native-protocol.peer = "UNIX socket client"
		native-protocol.version = "32"
		application.id = "org.VideoLAN.VLC"
		application.version = "3.0.4"
		application.icon_name = "vlc"
		application.language = "fr_FR.UTF-8"
		application.process.id = "2412"
		application.process.user = "paul"
		application.process.host = "lenovo-giacopelli"
		application.process.binary = "vlc"
		window.x11.display = ":1"
		application.process.machine_id = "f2baf977aa404579814f3a21ef3d1d1b"
		application.process.session_id = "3"
		module-stream-restore.id = "sink-input-by-media-role:video"

I'm sorry for the mistake...

Also, the speaker-test now seems to work with pulseaudio: the command runs correctly, but it is redirected to the dummy interface (I have no sound but I have the return on pavucontrol) and alsamixer has now this as default (in addition with HDMI and PCH).

EDIT:
I have  Jack installed (by default) could it be a conflict between pulseaudio an Jack (I don't know if Jack is useful with pulseaudio)

Re: [Solved] [Audio] No sound in neew Arch installation.

That's definitely a progress but- > sink: 0 <auto_null>. Sink still null. You might need to define it in /etc/pulse/default.pa
See this.
But your pacmd list-sinks only list the auto_null sink which I don't quite understand. It should really have an alsa-output as sink so you can define it.
Can you run pacmd list-sinks again while playing something?

Re: [Solved] [Audio] No sound in neew Arch installation.

The problem it seems from your log is you don't have a working pcm that's why you only get a null sink.
Can you post the output of alsa-info.sh?

Re: [Solved] [Audio] No sound in neew Arch installation.

Here it is.

What do you mean by no working pcm: Do you think that it's a driver problem? Or a configuration problem?

Re: [Solved] [Audio] No sound in neew Arch installation.

I'm not sure why you are getting this in your log:

(   0.010|   0.000) D: [pulseaudio] alsa-util.c: Trying hw:0 with SND_PCM_NO_AUTO_FORMAT ...
( 0.010| 0.000) I: [pulseaudio] alsa-util.c: Error opening PCM device hw:0: No such file or directory

It's the realtec I'm concerned about. In your dmesg, the realtec driver is loaded:

[    3.662947] snd_hda_codec_realtek hdaudioC1D0: autoconfig for ALC236: line_outs=1 (0x14/0x0/0x0/0x0/0x0) type:speaker

This looks to me the driver that talks to your speakers and it is loaded as a module. I'm not sure why it's not kicking in.
According to alsa-info.sh, you have 2 soundcards:

!!Soundcards recognised by ALSA
!!-----------------------------

 0 [HDMI           ]: HDA-Intel - HDA Intel HDMI
                      HDA Intel HDMI at 0xc1210000 irq 52
 1 [PCH            ]: HDA-Intel - HDA Intel PCH
                      HDA Intel PCH at 0xc1214000 irq 49

When you play something it uses the HDMI channel (see your pacmd list-cards) and it looks like your speakers are not reading this HDMI output . Try using PCH channel instead because according to aplay -L, that is your Realtec ALC236 card. This should correspond to snd_hda_codec_realtek which drives your speakers. Try this.

Re: [Solved] [Audio] No sound in neew Arch installation.

I finally found a solution to my problem here.
my old asound.conf contained this in addition to what I added to it (it was here at the beginning and I did not removed it):

defaults.ctl.card 1
defaults.pcm.card 1
defaults.pcm.device 7
defaults.timer.card 1

Thank you all for your help and support!
