GIMP 2.10.8: Cannot open pdf — Unknown file type

Hello,

I'm on a fresh arch installation, packages are up-to-date. I get the error message

"Opening '/path/to/file/filename.pdf' failed: Unknown file type"

  in GIMP. I am able to open the PDF-files in MuPDF.

Please help me out and if possible add some info on how you obtained the knowledge to solve the issue, or which steps are necessary to troubleshoot the issue so I can solve such problems by myself in the future.

Is poppler-glib installed? From the packages page/pacman -Qi gimp

poppler-glib (optional) - for pdf support

pacman will tell you about optional dependencies during first time installation of a package and new ones on update, make sure to read pacman's output.

Solved:

Is poppler-glib installed?

poppler-glib was already Installed:

sudo pacman -S poppler-glib
warning: poppler-glib-0.72.0-1 is up to date -- reinstalling

I reinstalled it and also reinstalled gimp, now everything works fine (i wonder why, perhaps GIMP also needed ghostscript (which I installed before reinstalling poppler-glib)).

I will make sure to heed your advice about the output of pacman and will use the command you provided

pacman -Qi packagename

and the page of the package to check for dependencies in the future.
