Ethernet not showing up on newly installed Arch

It was working fine on win10, Ubuntu, and ArchISO, but Arch, when installed, isn't working. ip addr says that the ethernet jack is at enp2s0. No lights are coming off the ethernet cable on either the computer's jack or that of which is on my switch. ip addr also gives the following UP code: "<NO-CARRIER,BRODCAST,MULTICAST,UP> idk what's happening, I'm new to the Arch community. Already tried moving around ethernet cables and such in case the switch had a bad port right now or it didn't like the cable, but no dice.

Ok.  What have you done to enable networking?  What networking service are you using?  Have you enabled and/or started dhcpcd?

Did you skip the network configuration step?  The iso comes with dhcpcd service already inabled, a base install does not.

Re: Ethernet not showing up on newly installed Arch

Seth, the "UP" in the brackets only shows that the interface is up, the rest of the line with the relevant UP/DOWN has not been included.  The UP in the brackets would be present after the equivalent of `ip link set enp2s0 up` while the more relevant UP/DOWN outside the brackets would be up after the equivalent of (a successfull) `dhcpcd enp2s0`.

(edit, typo s/set/seth/, though given the avatar set or setesh would also be fitting.)

Re: Ethernet not showing up on newly installed Arch

Have you tried this yet?

vi /etc/systemd/network/enp2s0.network

[Match]
name=en*
[Network]
DHCP=yes

You can use nano instead of vi

Save and exit. Restart your systemd network for the changes to reflect.

systemctl restart systemd-networkd
systemctl enable systemd-networkd

Add the below two entries in /etc/resolv.conf file.

nameserver 8.8.8.8
nameserver 8.8.4.4

In terminal try this:

ping archlinux.org

Edit: Looks like you have been taken care of already.

Since he says he ruled out the cable (and it worked on windows and the iso) this is most likely a firmware issue.
Once he has a carrier, we can worry about bringing the interface up and going ;-)

Re: Ethernet not showing up on newly installed Arch

Ah ... ok, so you were agreeing with my suggestion?  I'm confused.  There is no evidence here that any attempt has been made to establish a connection.  So the only symptom that one is no connection is present is not surprising and the simplest most parsimonious solution is to enable networking (e.g.. run dhcpcd).

Re: Ethernet not showing up on newly installed Arch

He has no carrier, he's not going to establish a connection no matter what. There's no physical communication between the two nodes.
(And to give me some wiggling room: maybe it's some power saving and you indeed just need to send some packages at the interface to wake it up. But let's see the dmesg - his reddit link seems bogus)

Re: Ethernet not showing up on newly installed Arch

If it worked on the ISO, and actual networking attempts have been made with dhcpcd/networkmanager/other but failed, then one firmware issue could be the fact that the ISO contains e.g. additional firmware for ipw2100-fw ipw2200-fw, as well as the broadcom-wl driver (but that one needs to be manually modprobed after removing any conflicting modules, so I would expect broadcom issues to be known in advance).

i did all that, can you run over the steps with me so i can be 100% sure?

Do you have removable media you can use for the transfer of the output of dmesg?  (apart from the installation media)

i believe that in the reddit link i did state that i already did all the network config stuff that the wiki says to do. i also told dhcpcd to run. i also tried stopping and restarting dhcpcd. do i possibly need to run systemctl dhcpcd enable or whatever it is? i havent run that

yes, but it has my archiso on it. i could just reset that usb to like fat32 or something and try to transfer it from there, but i dont know what i would run. is it possible to just need 1 line? if so i can search it with grep. On the screen right now i see something that looks possible: RTL8211B Gigabit Ethernet r8169-200:00: attached PHY driver [RTL8211B Gigabit Ethernet] (mii_bus:phy_addr=r8169-200:00, irq=IGNORE)

Re: Ethernet not showing up on newly installed Arch

Use the quote link on one post do not click submit select the contents of your response and copy it.
Use the quote link to on the next post you want to respond,  respond to that post and paste the copied contents so you multiple responses in one message then repeat as many times as needed.

Re: Ethernet not showing up on newly installed Arch

So I tried dhcpcd enp2s0 again.
heres the results:
enp2s0: waiting for carrier
timed out
dhcpcd exited

Re: Ethernet not showing up on newly installed Arch

The carrier is the physical connection between two nodes, ie. your cable.
When you plug it, the interfaces of the nodes have a brief chat to just assure they're there - this doesn't happen, so either the cable is broken, not properly plugged (on both ends!) or one of the nodes doesn't talk.

You installed the system onto some harddisk, right?
Run

dmesg | tee ~/dmesg.log

This will print the dmesg and also store it in ~/dmesg.log
Then boot the installation iso (where you seem to have network), mount the harddisk and paste the file. You can use https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Pastebin

Edit: because of "win10", see https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Du … t_Start-Up - if that's enabled it leaves the NIC in an undefined state - the difference between the iso and the installed system might be random luck.

do i mount the disk or just the linux partition?
also, i just booted the live usb. network isnt working. same error as on the install: ping: archlinux.org: temporary failure in name resolution

restarted my net switch, still not working. the switch is saying that everything is working fine. however, the port on the computer is odd. the left light is off and the right light is orange. any possibility as to what that means?

Yes, see https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Du … t_Start-Up
Also ensure you actually still have network on windows, otherwise it's the cable, because "it's always the cable™".

I'm not dualbooting. Arch is the only os installed.
