No sound on Gigabyte GA-Z170X Gaming 7 Mainboard onboard audio

Hi,

this is my first post in this forum, so I hope I do everything right.
I am using arch for quite some time on my desktop by now, but since I migrated my installation to a new mainboard, onboard sound is not working anymore. I found out that the mainboard I now have (GA-Z170X Gaming 7) does have different audio hardware on board, which is a creative ca0132 sound card (it still gets recognized as Intel HD sound apparently though)

dmesg gives me following output when grep-ing for `ca0132`:

[ 3.328360] snd_hda_codec_ca0132 hdaudioC1D0: autoconfig for CA0132: line_outs=1 (0xb/0x0/0x0/0x0/0x0) type:line
[ 3.328364] snd_hda_codec_ca0132 hdaudioC1D0: speaker_outs=0 (0x0/0x0/0x0/0x0/0x0)
[ 3.328367] snd_hda_codec_ca0132 hdaudioC1D0: hp_outs=1 (0x10/0x0/0x0/0x0/0x0)
[ 3.328369] snd_hda_codec_ca0132 hdaudioC1D0: mono: mono_out=0x0
[ 3.328371] snd_hda_codec_ca0132 hdaudioC1D0: dig-out=0xc/0x0
[ 3.328373] snd_hda_codec_ca0132 hdaudioC1D0: inputs:
[ 3.328375] snd_hda_codec_ca0132 hdaudioC1D0: Mic=0x12
[ 3.328377] snd_hda_codec_ca0132 hdaudioC1D0: Line=0x11
[ 3.893745] snd_hda_codec_ca0132 hdaudioC1D0: ca0132 DSP downloaded and running
[ 5.037288] snd_hda_codec_ca0132 hdaudioC1D0: ca0132 DSP downloaded and running

For some reason, the sound card shows up in PulseAudio and ALSA, and when playing audio, pavucontrol shows sound output (no input though), but there is no sound out- or input coming from or to it via the audio jack ports, also pavucontrol shows "unplugged" next to the output channels.
I am not able to test the digital/SPDIF output, as I don't have other hardware compatible to that.
The last time I updated and rebooted was right before testing again.
Is there a proper way to debug or even fix this?

Best regards
Sellerie

That chip is quite notorious for having issues, however as of kernel 4.18 better support should(TM) be available, with more improvements slated for 4.19, so if it doesn't work with 4.18 currently you might have better luck with the 4.19 kernel which isn't too far of. See the following thread for some further information on this: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=236364

Well it worked for a few weeks, but now it stopped working again for no apparent reason. I did nothing besides installing updates.
Sadly, there is no proper way of finding out what package exactly broke it sad

Driver support is usually in the kernel.  So the "linux" package would be the one responsible.  There is also "linux-firmware" which contains other files required for some hardware.  If you don't have linux-firmware installed then install that.  If that doesn't correct the issue then you can downgrade your kernel to a known-working one or put up with it and hope the next kernel fixes it.  If you want to help then you can also bisect the known good and bad kernels and make a bug report.  You'd have to make that report upstream though - the Linux kernel website.  You can also get cheap USB audio hardware too.  Just research compatibility first and order online so you can choose the compatible ones vs. just what your local stores have.
