Frequent manual reset of wi-fi connection required

Running the latest (I update several times a week) Arch on a not-too-old Asus laptop.   Beginning a few weeks ago began to experience constant 'dropped' online connection via wi-fi.  Generally has been very solid up to then.

Running gnome, and network status icons show connected, but dns times out.   To reset I toggle airplane mode to bring back connection.  I've tried changing the DNS servers, but that hasn't improved anything.

Running an otherwise solid (ie, other devices are fine) Linksys WRT 1200 AC with DD-WRT.  Have tried rebooting router, to no effect.  Have tried different channels and tried specifying a channel (ie, not using "Auto".)

I will often see "Resolving Host..." for a long time in Chrome--which is generally the first indication that the connection will time out.

Using networkmanager to handle connections.  VPN usually connected--but disconnecting doesn't improve stability.

Hardware:
02:00.0 Network controller: Qualcomm Atheros AR9485 Wireless Network Adapter (rev 01)
    Subsystem: AzureWave AW-NE186H
    Kernel driver in use: ath9k
    Kernel modules: ath9k

When I run dmesg following a timed-out connection to a website, I get:  (I don't use IPv6, so I don't know whether to ignore those messages):

[edit]  Starting to research dns_probe_finished_no_internet error--which is what the browser(s) display when the connection fails.
