Well at least now your card is properly detected again, I wouldn't rule it out that whatever caused your device to show up as Generic at one point, made the issue appear. Do you dual boot Windows? Did you reboot from Windows when the issue appeared? Have you made sure to disable fast boot on Windows?

Also if no one has posted in between, please edit your post to append new information instead of adding a new one.

No I do not use windoze at home. Only at work. 
The only dual booting I do is between kernel versions.

I have fast boot disabled in firmware.
If I enable it the kernel will not see my USB keyboard / mouse.
Been there and done that already ...
