I just installed a new P2000 Quadro graphics card which I am running a few issues with but I will deal with them in separate threads.
I had a fully working DAC when I was running my computer with just the builtin Intel graphics. Mpd, Cantata and pulse all working OK. All output was setup to come out of the DAC. But when I installed this graphics card, I can't access my DAC any longer. Here is what aplay -l says:
**** List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices ****
card 0: NVidia [HDA NVidia], device 3: HDMI 0 [HDMI 0]
Subdevices: 1/1
Subdevice #0: subdevice #0

card 1: PCH [HDA Intel PCH], device 1: ALC1220 Digital [ALC1220 Digital]
Subdevices: 1/1
Subdevice #0: subdevice #0No mention of the DAC. The HDA NVidia is obviously from the graphics card and the ALC1220 is the onboard motherboard sound card.
I will switch back to the integrated Intel Graphics and post my working setup.

After switching back to Intel I get my DAC back. aplay -l:

Yes I can confirm it was the indexing. I had an alsa-base.conf:
options snd_usb_audio index=0
options snd_hda_intel index=1when I was using the Intel graphics because the indexing keeps changing. I removed that and my DAC is back in the list. I just had to update my mpd to the new card index. Sound working now so I can close this thread.

It's still going to be random, you should account for all combinations to guarantee ordering for example your alsa-base.conf should look like
options snd_usb_audio index=0
options snd_hda_intel index=1,2
#Alternatively if you don't care about a specific index use a negative integer
#options snd_hda_intel index=-2,-2 #Will make them occupy any free index as long as it isn't 0or/and not rely on the card index in your mpd configuration

Thanks for the tip V1del. I will incorporate that. I didn't know you can have a negative index!
