Hello,
I'm pretty sure this is a udev issue, but any thoughts about where to start would be appreciated.
I'm using a Lenovo IdeaPad with Intel wifi. Anyway, Linux only recognizes wifi if there is a peripheral attached during boot. This could be a USB hub, a USB drive, even the power adapter. If anytbing like that is plugged in during boot, wifi works fine. It can be removed shortly after booting, but if it's not, I cannot bring up the adapter via any gui, nor via ip link set wlp2s0 up.
This has to be a udev issue, right?
I think it started around a week or two ago, but I'm not entirely sure. It's hard to say when it started because it's such a specific set of conditions to create the issue.
Any thoughts?
Thanks!

Try "usbcore.autosuspend=-1", https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Po … utosuspend
Notice that userspace power saving daemons (explicit ones as well as those found in major DEs) can and probably will alter the autosuspend behavior, so ensure to disable those services and try from the multi-user.target to isolate the issue.
Ftr: the "lsusb" and "ip l" *do* list the device/interface (the same) regardless of the presence of any other usb device?
What's the dmesg response for attempting to bring the interface up?

I tried turning it off in tlp. Upon rebooting, it still did the same thing. I'll try what you suggested going with kernel command line.
My wifi adapter is internal, not USB, so I'm not sure it's likely to be that. But, easy enough to try. My wifi device isn't in lsusb because it's not USB.
I did notice iwlwifi reporting a zillion errors, even when wifi was working. I'll dump the logs tonight and report back.
When the adapter isn't recognized, it gives an error that's something like this:

RTNETLINK answers: Input/Output error

"Universal Serial BUS", not "Universal Serial Plug" - it's going to be PCI or USB and because of the description I assumed the latter.
Please check lsusb and lspci and, most importantly, try w/ disabled TLP.

Disabling tlp didn't work. But, it's possible I turned on USB autosuspend elsewhere. I'm going to try disabling it tonight.
I also noticed that the iwlwifi errors are consistent with the use of Intel power saving, ala https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Wi … on#iwlwifi
I also feel like I set up a udev rule at some point for my wifi. I'll test all of these things tonight or tomorrow and report back.
Thanks!

I fixed it by disabling d0i3 in the iwlwifi module options.
Thanks!
