lxc containers fail as services

So I've been using lxc containers as system services for some time and suddenly they have stopped working in the background. However, if I run them in the foreground they work as they always have. The only error message I see is commands_utils.c: lxc_cmd_sock_rcv_state: 70 Resource temporarily unavailable - Failed to receive message. The containers are all running up to date arch linux and this behaviour is consistent across two arch linux servers. I've even followed wiki directions to build new containers with same results. Any help would be much appreciated.
