Problem with Xresources and xterm

I'd like to customize my terminal on my i3 window manager. I know that .Xresources is used for doing that, but xrdb .Xresources only does anything if I start another xterm instance from the current terminal.

That is, if I exit the current terminal and ALT+ENTER into it again, it wont be changed by xrdb.

How is it possible to change that behaviour?

Thanks in advance

Re: Problem with Xresources and xterm

Err... are you at least loading the .Xresources file on system start?
