Hi all,
I am in the process of seting up Arch on a machine of mine, but have tremendous problemes getting i3 to run.
In short, Xorg starts and screen goes black (briefly) and then returns to the terminal - without any input capabilities. I can switch to a different TTY and kill of the process. Switching to a separate TTY and then back will show a black screen (seems the buffer was cleared). I am using a newly installed system with proprietary nvidia drivers. No xorg.conf file(s) used and using 'startx' with an .xinitrc with 'exec i3' as the only appended text.
After looking through the Xorg logs for to many hours trying to find a cause for my problems I turn to you, any help would be greatly appreciated.

post your .xinitrc…
Edit: in case you long to use a multimonitor-across-gpu setting (no SLI), see https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/NVIDIA#Base_Mosaic

Here is my .xinitrc, currently configured for logging but as it turns out I need X running for that, and I also suspect this is not an i3 issue.
I only use one monitor so multimonitor setup is fortunately not something I have to worry about at this time. ![]()

Checked the xorg log, the problem is that outputs are only attached to the second GPU (should be 01:00.0) - you'll either have to attach the monitors to the other GPU or explicitly tag this one as primary w/ some xorg snippet along the lines of
Section "Device"
Identifier "Card A"
Driver "nvidia"
BusID "PCI:1:00:0"
Option "PrimaryGPU" "true"
EndSection
Section "Device"
Identifier "Card B"
Driver "nvidia"
BusID "PCI:2:00:0"
Option "PrimaryGPU" "false"
EndSectionOffline

As per your suggestion I created a new file '/etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-nvidia.conf' with the snipet above and things indeed works! I cant believe it was that simple.. Many thanks for the quick and remarkably accurate help!
