The general problem here is that whenever I scroll, watch a video, etc. in Firefox some portion of the screen lags behind the rest. I've searched the forums and found this but couldn't really solve the issue with it. I obviously don't know what exactly the issue is, but after some browsing I started to suspect that I didn't have the right drivers (if this isn't the problem any kind of redirection is much appreciated). I used 'lspci -v' to get information about the gpu and drivers, resulting in
$ lspci -v

Kernel driver in use: radeon
Kernel modules: radeon, amdgpuAccording to this Wiki entry my card should be in GCN 2 (this information comes from here and since I don't really know I just trusted post #3), and therefore AMDGPU* / ATI would be the appropriate drivers. I then checked if everything was installed as suggested in this Wiki entry, but wasn't able to install any 'lib32-'packages with the following error:
$ sudo pacman -S lib32-mesa
Fehler: Ziel nicht gefunden: lib32-mesawhich basically translates to "error: entry not found: lib32-mesa". "xf86-video-ati" is installed. As suggested by the wiki I then proceeded to edit "/etc/mkinitcpio.conf" which now looks like this:
MODULES=(amdgpu radeon)
mkinitcpio -p linux
BINARIES=()
FILES=()
HOOKS=(base udev autodetect modconf block filesystems keyboard fsck)The next instruction "Now, regenerate the initramfs." wasn't really clear to me.. When I try to run
mkinitcpio -c /etc/mkinitcpio.conf -g /boot/linux.imgI get the errors:
==> Building image from preset: /etc/mkinitcpio.d/linux.preset: 'default'
-> -k /boot/vmlinuz-linux -c /etc/mkinitcpio.conf -g /boot/initramfs-linux.img
==> ERROR: You appear to be calling a preset from a preset. This is a configuration error.
==> ERROR: Unable to write to /boot/initramfs-linux.img
==> Building image from preset: /etc/mkinitcpio.d/linux.preset: 'fallback'
-> -k /boot/vmlinuz-linux -c /etc/mkinitcpio.conf -g /boot/initramfs-linux-fallback.img -S autodetect
==> ERROR: You appear to be calling a preset from a preset. This is a configuration error.
==> ERROR: Unable to write to /boot/initramfs-linux-fallback.img
==> ERROR: Unable to write to /boot/linux.imgSo I'm not sure if the issue lies here... The last thing I tried was setting up the "/etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-radeon.conf" file with the content
Section "Device"
Identifier "Radeon"
Driver "radeon"
EndSectionNothing of the above really solved my problem and I'm honestly a bit lost at the moment. Any kind of help on how to proceed from here would be appreciated!
Offline
To install lib32-* packages, you have to enable the multilib repositories.
The line
mkinicpio -p linuxshould not be inside mkinitcpio.conf. It's a command to run after editing the file.
Offline
There's also absolutely no point in putting both modules into the initcpio and while early kms might be nice, it won't solve this issue.
You should be using the amdgpu kernel module, but are using the radeon one, so the first step would be to determine what's wrong here.
See whether amdgpu is blacklisted in /etc/modprobe.d/*
Once you can load the amdgpu kernel module you want to get rid of xf86-video-ati, maybe in favor of xf86-video-amdgpu.
I doubt this is a lib32 issue, FF should be 64bit except maybe some proprietary 3rd party plugins.
Offline
See whether amdgpu is blacklisted in /etc/modprobe.d/
The directory is empty ('$ ls -a' only shows '. ..'). I tried changing the "/etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-radeon.conf" file to "/etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-amdgpu.conf" with
Section "Device"
Identifier "AMD"
Driver "amdgpu"
EndSectionwhich resulted in a crash right after trying to use 'startx'. I changed it back again, but if I'm not mistaken, this should be the log file of the crash:

Check your dmesg, however it's very likely that you have to do this to enable the usage of AMDGPU

What would be rather odd, since this should™ be a volcanic island GPU.

You can try.
If it fails, try to add "module_blacklist=radeon" instead. Did you previously add the radeon module to the initramfs?
Edit: the "safe" way to do this is to alter the kernel parameters at the bootloader commandline, rather than editing the bootloaders config (if something goes wrong, you just have to reboot)

I rebooted and entred the grub-commandline using 'c'.. Typed in
radeon.si_support=0 amdgpu.si_support=1
radeon.cik_support=0 amdgpu.cik_support=1and booted up. 'lspci -v ' showed the same settings as in first post... I then again rebooted and this time tried 'module_blacklist=radeon', but again 'lspci -v' gives the same result.
Did I do something wrong, I'm not really familiar with the bootloader commandline...

You can check "cat /proc/cmdline"
Did you previously add the radeon module to the initramfs?

$ cat /proc/cmdline
BOOT_IMAGE=(hd0,msdos5)/vmlinuz-linux root=/dev/sda6Did you previously add the radeon module to the initramfs?
I'm sorry, but I can't really remember.. But it's certainly possible that I did that while trying to solve the issue on my own...

lsinitcpio /boot/initramfs-linux.img | grep radeonWhat wrote your grub.conf? That doesn't look like a grub-mkconfig token.

I run
lsinitcpio /boot/initramfs-linux.img | grep radeondidn't get any message back. Rebooted, but no change regarding the drivers.
What wrote your grub.conf? That doesn't look like a grub-mkconfig token.
The base was produced with
grub-install --target=i386-pc /dev/sda
grub-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfgbut since this pc is a dual boot with windows 10 in legacy mode I added manually
if [ "${grub_platform}" == "pc" ]; then
menuentry "Microsoft Windows Vista/7/8/8.1/10 BIOS/MBR" {
insmod part_msdos
insmod ntfs
insmod ntldr
search --no-floppy --fs-uuid --set=root --hint-bios=hd0,msdos1 --hint-efi=hd0,msdos1 --hint-baremetal=ahci0,msdos1 XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
ntldr /bootmgr
}
fiwhere XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX stands for the UUID (directly taken from here from the dual boot section)

Ftr, the commandline you posted does not suggest any additional parameters (neither the blacklist nor the SI/CIK manipulation)
