LightDM does not start when booting -> Black Screen

Hi, I am quite new to Arch Linux

I have installed lightDM as my DisplayManager. When it is enabled, my screen turns black during the boot process.

I can start lightdm manually, i can also start xfce4 manually.

Maybe someone has an idea what the cause of the problem is?

Ill provide you with a few logs:

Re: LightDM does not start when booting -> Black Screen

The Intel Core i5-8400 has an integrated gpu.

Since you also have a nvidia videocard there's a 99.9% chance you're running a hybrid graphics aka optimus setup.
Those often require additional configuration.

post lspci -k and xorg logs, throughly read https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/NVIDIA_Optimus

Disliking systemd intensely, but not satisfied with alternatives so focusing on taming systemd.

Re: LightDM does not start when booting -> Black Screen

Try https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Li … TTY_output and/or https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Ke … _KMS_start

However before trying that second part, are you sure you want to use nouveau on this chipset? It's performance is likely to be quite low.

Hi V1del, hi Lone_Wolf,

i was travelling for a week and was not able to have a look at it.

I tried both options you have suggested.

When  logind-check-graphical=true the following happens:

Archlinux is booting, displaying the usual log messages during the boot process until it LightDM is started.

https://386er.github.io/IMG_0523.jpg

The screen turns black for a short moment, however then turns on again, showing again the boot screen.

HOWEVER, the screen seems rendered in a different way, using a different graphic device. It then freezes and ligthdm is not shown.

Mod Edit - Replaced oversized images with links.
CoC - Pasting pictures and code

Re: LightDM does not start when booting -> Black Screen

Hi, the update at lightdm-1:1.28.0-3-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz has fixed the bug.

Re: LightDM does not start when booting -> Black Screen

Got the same errors with lightdm, still waiting for the new fix to roll down the line. I'm rolled back to the previous for now.
Thanks for the update.

The Intel Core i5-8400 has an integrated gpu.

Since you also have a nvidia videocard there's a 99.9% chance you're running a hybrid graphics aka optimus setup.
Those often require additional configuration.

post lspci -k and xorg logs, throughly read https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/NVIDIA_Optimus

note how i5-8400 is a desktop cpu, and i have never seen nvidia optimus on a desktop. There is no need for extra configuration as long as the monitor is plugged in directly to the gpu video out.

Re: LightDM does not start when booting -> Black Screen

Have you tried the proprietary driver? or the intel integrated graphics?

Re: LightDM does not start when booting -> Black Screen

While hybrid graphics started on laptops approx 6 years ago, that technique is also used on desktops and has become the only method of combining integrated  and discrete gpu.
intel integrated gpu + discrete nvidia card equals Hybrid Graphics.

If you use intel + nouveau drivers, we call that a PRIME setup.
intel + nvidia proprietary driver is called an Optimus setup.

Disliking systemd intensely, but not satisfied with alternatives so focusing on taming systemd.
